LEO SKOLNY A SURPRISE FIRST IN THE AZEA HANDICAP AT CHURCHILL DOWNS, DEFEATING PRINCE HERMIS. Poppee Wins in a Canter and Is Bid Up— Cane Run a Failure — Suggestion Chicago Meeting May Be Set Back. Louisville. Ky.. May 23. — R. .T. Mackenzies Leo Skolny furnished a surprise at Churchill Downs this afternoon when he accounted for the Azra Handicap of 00 at thrce- |uarters in Jt tight finish with Prince Hermis. Chalmers was third. Leo Skolny began slowly, but gaining steadily, although coming Vide and succeeded under a rousing ride from OMMC in getting up in the last stride. Goose contributed some to Leo Skolnys victory through liis failure to observe that horses close proximity in the last sixteenth, which caused him to Ix-come can-less after noting lie had Chalmers Iwaten. Chalmers ran witi his customary style, dashed into a long lead, but tired in the last eighth. Track condition-: in the early part of the afternoon still favored mud runners, but the mm dried out rapidly as the afternoon progressed. Fine weather was again responsible for a banner attendance and speculation was of the usual good volume. The defeat of Cane Pun and his failure to run to a place was due to his fractious acting at the post, which caused him to be virtually left. He ran into a prominent position on the stretch turn, but losing ground, by a wide turn, caused him to be beaten for any part of the money. Poppee. which showed high speed for the entire race, won witli consummate ease and after the finish, John Whitlow, owner of Cardome. which landed second, advanced the winner from an entered price of 00 to fl.KK, but failed to get her. C. C. Van Meters Evelyn V. accounted for the first purse that owner had placed to his credit in a long time, when she scored in the third race. Jockey Kirschbaum. who had the mount on Fallal, whs unseated on the first turn as a result of some interference that caused her to stumble. The rider escaped unhurt. Dr. Tuck made a show of the juveniles he met in the opening dash. Thomas Carey, owner of the Hawthorne track. was among todays arrivals and discussed with horsemen the proposed racing revival in Chicago. He spoke favorably of the project and likewise guve earnest consideration to the horsemens view-that It would serve the interests of racing best if Hawthorne would inaugurate its meeting following the close of racing at Latonia. Mr. Carey will put this idea before those behind the venture. "I think the suggestion that many of the horsemen made to defer the opening at Hawthorne until after the close of the Kentucky season would enable more of the horsemen to go to Chicago. It would nlso aid considerably in the securing of good officials to serve." Mr. Carey will leave for Chicago tonight. According to Mr. Carey. Martin Nathan-son will probably be the secretary. Pluck Beauty was sold this morning at private terms to John N. Huffman. W. R. Coe has reconsidered his intention of shipping his crack filly Jacoba to run in the Kentucky Oaks on Saturday next. Trainer Carroll wired to that effect this morning. Gen. Manager John Hachmeister who was at the truck this afternoon stated that everything was in thorough readiness for the opening of the thirteen days meeting at Douglas Park next Monday and. that numerous improvements on the course makes it take rank with the premier tracks of the country. George W. Innes made application today to the Kentucky State Pacing Commission for a trainers license. He will lisume trailing the Jesse Spencer horses, including Blackic Daw. winner of last years Cincinnati Trophy and other stakes. Jefferson Livingston has sent notification to the different racing Mia that jockey Poy Urquhart. under contract to him. has left his employ without consent and owners are warned against harboring the rider.
