May 27. — It is barely a week now until the Kentucky Handicap will be decided. This event, at a mile and a quarter, for three-year-olds and over will be run as the fifth race next Saturday. June 3. at Douglas Park. The Douglas Park meeting begins Monday, and for thirteen days the thoroughbreds which have been racing at the earlier Kentucky meetings will strive for turf honors on this -ourse. which is one of the most Ix-autiful in the west, and has gradually been winning popularity of the highest order since manager John Hachmeister begun putting on spring as well as fall meetings at this course. There are many good horses being especially pointed for the Kentucky Handicap and, moreover, a number of these have already shown great form in their racing. Tin se embrace Borrow, Hodge, Uoanier. Waterblessom, Boyal II., Prince Hermis, Leo Kay. Bayberry Caudle. Ed Crump, Bulse. Water Witch and Dick Williams. It can well be aakei after a competent hamiicapper like J. B. Campbell has put the weights on these horses, which one will win the Kentucky Handicap in IMC. It is lM-lieved now that every one of the above-named twelve horses will go to the post in the big race and. in addition, there are other eligible* to the race that may be among the starters, these embracing Marion Goosby. Hank ODay, Embroidery. Cosmic. Old Koenig and Bryn-limah. The weights for the event will be posted by handicapiH-r Campbell May 30. With fast track conditions it is possible that the winner of the Kentucky Handicap this year may even reduce the record in the race of 2:02 k, made by Luke McLuke when he won the event in 1914, which mark also constitutes the Kentucky record for a mile and a quarter. With the many new and costly improvements made at the Douglas Park plant since last year, the course has no superior among racing parks in the west. Its dimensions are now close to 130 acres of ground. It is situated in Highland Park South lxuisvillo. and is but two and one-half miles from the City Hall, on one of the most beautiful boulevards ever laid out. The Fourth avenue street cars run direct to the track from the heart of the city during race days in about twenty-five minutes. In addition to the Kentucky Handicap, there are feature purse races on the card each day. These are: Monday. May 29 — The Highland Park Handicap; purse ,000. Tuesday. May 30 — The Memorial Handicap; purs-.- ,000. Wednesday, May 31 — The Shawnee Handicap; purse ,000. Thursday. June 1 — The Iro.juois Handicap; purse 01. Friday, June 2 — The Cherokee Handicap; purse .ooo. Saturday. June 3— The Central Park Handicap; purse . Same date, the Kentucky Handicap, with 0,000 add.-d. This constitutes the program for the first six lays. while on the remaining seven days there is a lumdicap on each afternoon and which have been named for neighlioring small cities adjacent to I/misville, such as Shelbyville, Anchorage. Balds town. I.aGrangc. Jeffersoiitown, Pewee Valley and Lyndon. During the last seven days of the meeting there are also two other stake races to ha decided, they Itoing the Speculation Stakes with ,500 added, to be run June 10. and the Spring Trial Stakes with ,500 added, to be run on the closing day of the meeting. Monday, June 12. On all stake days, during tin- coming meeting, reduced rates prevail on all railroads entering this city from all points in Kentucky. The Douglas Park track and course is under the general management of John Hachmeister. who also presides over the destinies of the Ijitonia track.
