SPUR WINS THE HISTORIC WITHERS STAKES. Belmonts Friar Rock Finishes Third — White Hackle Evidently in Good Form Again. New York. June fi. — Spur, one of James Butlers three-year-olds, today demonstrated that he is without doubt a colt of high quality when he met and defeated formidable opitosition in the Withers Stakes. The colt was reported as having struck himself in his work yesterday morning and entered the paddock with a heavy bandage on one of his forelegs. On leaving the paddock for the post, however, he seemed to walk as if nothing was the matter with him. Shortly after the start Loftus allowed him to drop back and with Friar Rock, the favorite, he raced head and head while bringing up the rear down the backstretch. On the far turn Friar Rock, attempting to go through was forced to be taken back, losing many lengths, and Spur, racing up on the outside, was soon in a eon-tending position. He came wide on the stretch turn, but Loftus soon had him going straight and in a hard drive which lasted through the stretch he finally headed Churchill, which ran a surprisingly good race. Friar Rock was a distant third. The race caused many shrewd judges to pronounce the Butler colt the best three-year-old now racing in the east. The Withers this year was worth ,900 net. Second in importance to the Withers was the P.ayside Handic ap. at one mile, which brought out an evenly-matched held of second-class handicap horses. Sharpshooter was returned the victor. The Parsons four -year -old showed improvement today and, although forced to a territie drive to overcome Mustard in the final eighth, got home by a head. Roly, the early pacemaker ami making his first start, was third. Gainer evidently found his impost too great and finished unplaced. White Hackle, assaying his first start of the year, scored over fair opposition in the opener. Phis Colt, which was purchased by his present owner frota John E. Madden last year, for a reported price of 8,000. went amiss at Saratoga last summer and was thrown out of training, but the manner in which he won todays race showed that he will undoubtedly defeat better opitoncnts and is a tribute to the skill of his trainer, Jerry Carrol!. Saratoga was a mild surprise when he defeated the Mids -on choice Pandean in the second. The latter had won easily the last time out after racing wide, but today he succumbed in the stretch to Saratoga. Mo took the steeplechase in a thrilling finish over Dixon Park and Syosset. The latter got to the front after the last hurdle was passed, but tired right at tiie end. In the Withers. E. Haynes, who rode Friar Rock, was thrown against the fence and his leg was badly scraped in the mixup. Jockey T. McTaggart was taken ill today and was forced to cancel his engagements for the afternoon. Flying Fairy, which won in an impressive manner Saturday, is being pointed for the Ladies Handicap, for which she is assigned top weight. Word was received here today of the death of Richard C. Benson, who for two years trained the horses of James Butler. AV. C. Clancv. who has charge of the Wickliffe Stable, received a dispatch from Kansas city to that effect this morning. Benson made a reputation with trotting horses l e-fore he took charge of Mr. Butlers stable. He had been ill for a year or two with kidney trouble. Loftus was suspended for the rest of the meeting for rough riding in the Withers. Work-outs this morning with the track fast were : Bromi — Mile in 1:45. Candy Land— Five-eighths in 1:04%.
