SOME FAST DERBY TRIALS BIO SMOKE COVERS A MILE AND A HALF IN THE FAST TIME OF 2:33%. George Smith Works a Fraction Slower but with Mors Weight Up— Latonias Big Bace Takes on a More Open Aspect. I" Cincinnati, O., June 13. — Latnnia will inaugurate tomorrow it* summer season of racing under condi-tions most flattering for the sueeess of the sport. According to the track suoerintendciits tabulation, there will Ik- available close to 900 horses to take part in the racing. Most of them are in fit racing condition and include the cracks that have been seen under odors on other Kentucky courses since the opening of the season. Local interest in the s[Hirt this season appeals creator than in former years and a record-breaking crowd is exacted to be in attendance for the opening. Ideal conditions prevail at present, the track particularly being in an excellent state. Numerous improvements on the plant since last fall have added greatly to the completeness and beauty of the course. The new bridge spanning the lake in the infield was put up at a cost of over 0. KM and is of steel and concrete. The new stables are also erected along substantial lines and are commodious. Hustle and activity prevailed at the course most of the day because of the constant arrivals, the bulk of the horses from Louisville reaching the track in the afternoon. Secretary Iearces opening offering, while light in number of starters for the different races, should result in excellent sport. The Inaugural Handicap, With ,000 added, at one mile and a sixteenth, which features the card, will bring together many stars, including Ed Crump, winners of this years rich Kentucky Handicap. While considerable interest is displayed in tomorrows opening the "day of all days" will be Saturday. June 17, when the Latonia Derbv is set for decision. This is the last of the Kentuckv fixtures to which any of the associations add 0,000. The race at first regarded as almost a gift for George Smith, winner of the Kentucky Derby, has now taken on a complex appearance, due to the good form rei-ently shown by several of the starters. John W. Schorr feels sanguine that Dick Williams will take the measure of the San ford crack, and trainer Wallace is likewise confident Big Smoke will give the eastern -owned three-year-old a royal struggle for the honors. Big Smoke was worked a mile and a half this morning in 2:33%. the fractional time as follows-Quarter mile in 28, half mile in 49, three-quarters in 1:15. mile in 1 :40%, The colt finished fresh. George Smith with his full Derby weight up. 127 pounds, went the mile and a half this morning in 2:34. the fractional time being as follows: quarter. 23%; half. 48; three-quarters. 1:14; mile, 1:40; and mile and a quarter in 2:00%. In addition to the above. Dodge, Franklin. Jack ODowd, Votary and Old Koenig are regarded as probable starters in the Derby. Dr. Moore, which is carded to start tomorrow will probably not fill his engagement, as he suffered a slight mishap on his way here from Louisville. George H. Senn. before departing for his home in St. Ixniis to take a rest, sold Hifle Shooter to W. H. Baker: Cardigan to J. B. Kespess and Prince S. to J. M. Henry. Jr. There will be no dearth of riders here, as all the Jockeys who rode at the Louisville tracks are on hand. The betting arrangements will be the same as formerly, thirty inutuel machines being in use daily of the . . .0 and 0 denominations.
