i TWO GOOD STAKE RACES AT JAMAICA. _ Yankee Witch Victress in the Rosedale Stakes and Spur Takes the Southampton Handicap. New York, June 17. — Two events, either of which would have served as a feature, were on the program at Jamaica today and a big crowd was on hand despite the threatening weather. The Kosc-dale Stakes, for two-year-old fillies, brought out an evenly matched field, with honors greatly divided. It went to the shifty Yankee Witch, purchased from J. E. Madden by the Olen Riddle Farm, and which has shown steady improvement in all of her races. W. EL Karrick. who saddled the winner, also sent Koh-i-noor and Artemis to the post in the same race, the former for S. L. Parsons, and the latter for the Oneck Stable. The race was worth ,475 to the winner. Yankee Witch showed her customary high turn of sjieed and, after racing close up, scored easily. Artemis ran a bit green and was closing up fast. Spur showed his quality when he defeated high grade opposition in the Southampton Handicap, one mile and a sixteenth, and worth ,175 to the winner. The Butler colt was asked to carry 125 pounds, but he did it with consummate ease and with Loftus riding confidently throughout. Spur showed all of the brilliant form he displayed in the early part of the MWM. He was allowed to follow the leaders around the first turn, but when going down the backstretch Loftus sent him into a contending IHisition and he raced to the front on the far turn and was never seriously menaced thereafter. The track was heavy next to the MM rail and horses drawing an inside -post position had the worst of it during the afternoon. Brooks, fresh from a campaign in Kentucky, scored over Dolina. another Kentucky arrival, in the opener. The winner was liost, for he went wide on the stretch turn and got up in time to get the decision by a scant margin. Republican, heavily backed to the exclusion of the others, had a close call in the second, but he won only after a desjicrnte drive all through the final quarter of a mile to bent Illuminator. Frank C. Bishop, who was liest known as one of the owners of the Newcastle Stable, was a visitor today. John Sanford was also on hand. He decided not to make the trip to Latonia to see George Smith run in the Derby. Before the first race Brooks was purchased by .1. E. Davis and ran in that turfmans colors. He will M converted into a jumper later on. Triple Crown and Phantom, in the Cochran stable. are both ailing, the former having u wrenched back and the latter pulling up lame today. Speculation was heavier than usual today and it was about the best days sport from every standpoint witnessed at the Jamaica course this year.
