SUNSHINE HELPS MATTERS AT OTTAWA. Bondage Gives a Sterling Display of Speed in Defeating Waukeag and Manokin. Ottawa. Ont.. June 17.— After almost seventy-two hours of rain the sun came out this morning and conditions at Connaught Park were • more pleasant than on any day since the meeting I began. There was a big iucn ase in the attendance I and witli it came an increase in the volume of c speculation. The track was still deep and holding. • but despite this disadvantage stirring contests were the rule, the smallest of margins separating the first two horses in the first four races. It was a great days sport and highly appreciated by f the large crowd present. Much enthusiasm was s manifested and the winners were warmly applauded. The best contest of the afternoon attended the s running of the third race, in which James Arthurs s Bondage came from last place in the homestretch and just mnnagiil to get up in the closing stride to beat Waukeag out by a nose. Bondage closed fully a dozen lengths in the final eighth and his race was an impressive one. Besides Waukeag. back of him finished the Bedwell colt. Manokin. Steeplechase jockey James K. Kussell has scvi red his relations with G. P. Sherman and has signed a contract to ride the jumpers in the stable of apt. W. F. Presgrave. Sea Lord is one of the green jumiM-rs that Captain Presgrave is training and is said to lie a promising steeplechaser. C. F. Freeman left for Montreal with ji»key Schanierhorn to work some of the horses he left at Blue Bonnets before shipping to Hamilton. J. J. McCafferty. who resigned as trainer for T. U. Love, will purchase some horses of his own to race on the half-mile circuit. Garter and Nila. owned by Love, are now in the Garth stable. Charles O. Smith and Sam Spencer were visitors at Connaught Iark this afternoon. They left to night for Hamilton to arrange details in the WW mutuel department for the opening of the Hamilton Jockey Clubs meeting liegiiming Saturday next. Jockey Casey Jones, while galloping one of the Weant horses this morning, had his leg crushed when his mount ran into the fence. William Walker, W. C. Weant and F. Johnson have arranged to ship their horoeo from here to Fort Erie at the conclusion of the meeting. Edward McBride and W. A. Carter will ship to Hamilton on Monday. Several other owners will leave in the early part of next week. J. Sl.igie has put in an application for an agents license for William Martin, and Hart Newman. The latter, who is at his home at Sweetwater, Tex., breaking some two-year-olds, has planned to ship a dozen or fifteen horses from Texas for a fall campaign mi the Canadian tracks. In the band to lie brought here will 1m- the fast filly Helen Miller and possibly Pan Zareta. Young Mr. Robert D::vi"s was .iv arrival from Toronto, lie came to look over the horses Henry Mc-Daniel is training for him and also to take in a tew days of racing here.
