MUDDY TRACE RACING AT JAMAICA. Startling Takes the Newtown Selling Stakes — Ormesdale Defeats Marse Henry, New York, June 19.— Intermittent showers which prevailed throughout the afternoon, finally developed into a veritable downpour after the running of the fourth race. The track, which had been muddy previously was made extremely sloppy. The Newtown Selling Stakes was the afternoons special feature and it went to It. F. Carmans Startling, which led from the start to win in easy fashion. Ktrusean. the receding favorite, was second and Bonnie Tcss third. The best race of the afternoon was the Bichmond Handicap at three-quarters, which attracted some sjieody sprinters. The withdrawal of Comely left it an open affair. B. T. Wilsons Ormesdale was returned the winner after a stirring stretch drive with the heavily backed Marse Henry. The latter horse, making his first start under the colors of the Brighton Stable, was shuffled to the rear immediately after the start, but Taplin sent him up with a rush and on the far turn he was lapped on Ormesdale. which had begun fast and took a long lead in the first eighth of a mile. The two turned for home closely aligned and it seemed as if Marse Henry would triumph, but Ormesdale hung on gamely and. the weight telling at the finish, won by a scant head. The second race found the talent divided between Shyness and Old Broom, with the latter a slight favorite. Shyness, however, was right at home in the going and led throughout, to win by over a length. Old Broom had no mishaps, but may not have run to his best form in the going. Vixen just lasted to take the opener over the fast coming Alone at Last. Jitney, which finished a close up third, might have won with a clear course, as she was away slowly and dosed an immense gap. After Shyness had won, she was bid up from 00 to ,200 by G. Alexandra, but was retained. Her owner then claimed Old Broom, wheh finished third in the same race. Jockey Q. Preece. while astride Etruscan in the fourth race, was jammed against the fence at the liost and suffered a compound fracture of one of his legs. He rode a good finish despite his accident and. after the race, was carried to and from the scales. W. T. Anderson has found it necessary to destroy the th it c-year-nld filly Benard.
