NEAR THE CLOSE OF AQUEDUCT MEETING. Baybcrry Candle Succumbs to Hanson in a Grand Race Tragedy Takes the Astoria. New York, July 10. The grand mare, Bayberry Candle, was unequal to the task of carrying her heavy impost of 128 pounds to victory in the handicap at Aqueduct today, but it was not until she had driven Hanson out to the last ounce to beat her; she was giving him twenty-six pounds in weight, according to the scale. Contrary to general expectations, Hanson made the pace, Loftus being content to make the race a sprint of a quarter of a mile with Baybcrry Candle. Hanson took the lead in the first stride and held it all the way, while Bayberry Caudle and Sun God followed as a team. The latter was first to move up on the leader, but his efforts were fruitless. Shortly afterwards Loftus made his effort. He probably waited a fraction too long, for he just failed to get up and Hanson got the verdict by a nose. The time of the race, considering that the track was a bit dull as a result of rain, was excellent, being within one-fifth of a second of the track record made by Roamer two years ago. Had the going been at its best there is no question the record would have been reduced. Much was expected from Daddys Choice, but the pace was too hot for him. Notwithstanding the threatening weather, the attendance was up to the average. There was considerable favorable comment on the book issued by the Illinois Jockey Club. Quite a number of horses will be shipped to Chicago from this district during the next few days. The Astoria Dinner Stakes, for two-year-old fillies, resulted in a victory for II. K. Knapps Tragedy, which won by a scant margin over August Belmonts Serenest, the odds-on choice. Tragedy ran close up from the start and took a short lead at the eighth post. From there home she managed to retain her advantage, although under a hard drive and closely pressed by Serenest. She got the decision by a head. Haynes rode Serenest close to Tragedy in the closing strides, but not enough to affect her chances. Tragedy was bought as a yearling for ,000 and is a sister to Horron, Amos Turneys good horse or a few years back and a frequent winner on the Canadian turf. Jockey Allen Lee, who fell while astride White Metal in todays steeplechase, suffered a concussion of the brain and was rushed to St. Marys Hospital in Jamaica. The Saratoga Special for two-year-olds closed July 1 with thirty-four subscriptions, which included three horses from each .nominator. Two double subscriptions were declared out by G. A. Cochran, W. It. Coe, A. K. Macomber, John Sanford and II. P. Whitney. The subscriptions were 50 each, half forfeit, and the Saratoga Association will add ,000 worth of gold plate. Racebrooks race today represented a track record for the about two miles steeplechase course. Robert Gaylor will make jockey L. Minks engagements during the Empire City meeting. It was a disastrous day for the backers of favorites. The first choices went down to defeat like ten pins. Brave was the first to disappoint, then El Bart broke down. Serenest was nosed out, as was Bayberry Candle, and the hottest choice of the dav, Raconteuse, failed to run to a place. Golden Gate, after his victory in the fifth race, was sold to the Marrone Stable, which bid ,200 for the gelding. R. Newman claimed Raconteuse out of the fifth race for ,315. Gleipiier was advanced 00 by G. A. Alexandra, but was bought in by the stable for 03.
