The Yonkers police have done much to help the - sport since racing began at Empire City. Outside - the track more than a score of handbook men gathered to do business on the races, but before they could book any bets. the police scattered thim 1 and gave warning that the next attempt to break the law would result in arrest and prosecution. A. Rowley who rode with marked success in Calcutta during the past racing season in India, did not remain long in Australia. He has gone back to India. While in Melbourne Rowley had a couple of mounts, and his style was sufficiently unusual to bo productive of comment. Nevertheless, his deeds in India proclaim him a capable horseman. Although the totalisator investments 032,SS0 at the Auckland Racing Clubs recent jumping meeting fell short of those at the corresponding fixture last year, the clubs turnover for the eleven davs it raced this year is a record, being something over 2,500,000. If that amount goes through in eleven days in a city the size of Auckland, how much would be invested in the twenty days on which there is racing at Sydneys principal race course? Somehow, 1 doubt whether something more than ten millions would be an exaggerated estimate, even in these times of depression Pilot in Sydney Referee. Captain Edward 15. Cassatt has presented his promising apprentice ride, E. Campbell, with a handsome -watch as a prize for his successes this season. This is the first year that Campbell has ridden and with comparatively few opportunities he has been first past the post on six occasions. The watch is handsomely engraved with the names of the various winners on the inside of the case, while the outside bears the boys monogram. The winners were Sun Cod, Daingerfield, Flying lairy, Marie Odile, Hauberk and Trial by Jury. Of those Trial by Jury is given the place of honor and m addition to the engraved name it is set forth that his victory was in the Carter Handicap. Sportsmen all over the world will regret to learn that the veteran English trainer and famous old-time jockev Tom Cannon, is seriously ill. He is confined to his bed at his residence at Stock-bridge suffering from a severe heart attack. Mr. Cannon, who is 70, has been in ill. health for some time past.
