MISS PUZZLES ARROW SELLING STAKES. Speedy Filly Wins in a Close Finish with the Fast Gaining Hauberk. New York, July 2d. Tin; Arrow Selling Stakes over the short throe-quarters course, brought out a well-matched band of sprinters. Conning Tower going to the post favorite. The latter set a great; pace down the backstretch, with Miss Puzzle nearest in pursuit. While rounding - into the stretch Miss Puzzle raced into the lead and appeared :ui i 4 easy winner, but Hauberk, coming witli a rush, almost nipped the Butler mare and would have won in another stride. Conning Tower was thin. Murphy showed none of his brilliant speed. The Arrow was worth ,000 net. Irince of Coino reduced the "about six furlongs " course record by three-fifths of a second. The record had stood untouched for sixteen years after having been made by Cliiictaniinila in P.luO. Whether the course today is the same length as it was in 1000 is a question, as a chute was built some years ago over which three-quarters races were run, but it was dispensed with this year and a short course replaced it. Todays record, however, will be placed on the official books of the association, as the present short course is to be a fixture. High Noon was favorite for the race but. though he finished third, could not get near Irince of Como, which led all the way. This colt is evidently just regaining some of his last years form, and is likely to be quite a factor in sprinting races in the future. II. Fink ran up Nephthys. winner of the third race, from ,100 to .r,0!l and secured her at that figure. This is the third horse he has obtained out of selling races, Sasin and Dervish being the others. Woodward, the beaten favorite of the third race, was claimed by J. W. llodriok for ,740 from the Brighton Stable. After dolileu date won the-fifth, J. Kelly, trainer for R. Newman, original owner of the horse, advanced him from to ,200 and the Marmno Stable bid of ,500. retaining him. The weather was sultry, with a promise of rain.
