CANADIAN RACING MAN IS DEAD. Woodstock, Out., July 29. By the death of Erastus Burgess at his home on Wednesday, Woodstock lost one of its best known residents, and a horseman who placed this city on the racing map many vears ago. Born in the township of Blenheim, when quite a young man he moved to what is now known as the Burgess homestead just north of the city. It was not long after moving to the vicinity of Woodstock until Mr. Burgess went into the breeding of thoroughbred horses. In those days Woodstock had a race track and a number of horsemen who had continental reputations. One of these was John Forbes, and with him Mr. Burgess associated himself in the horse business. He raised, trained :lnd raced many good horses and had the honor of winning a Queens Plate race in 1885. Willie W. was the horse he won with and he was one of six that Mr. Burgess raised from the good mare Itoxaline. Those acquainted with racing history twentv-five years ago will well remember such horses as Brait, Fred B., Princess, Willie W., April Fool and Rockaford. Again old-time race-goers will remember the success Mr. Burgess had witli those two good horses of the late John Forbes, Vicksburg and Bill Bruce. These two he raced in the United States and won many valuable purses.
