i 1 I STAKES FOR KENTUCKY FALL RACING. Louisville, Ky., July 29. With the opening of the autumn season of racing in Kentucky, due on September 0 at Lexington, it is but a few days over a month now before the return in great numbers of this state of the leading racing strings of the country, a majority of which will participate in the fall racing campaign in this state. Already at the local courses, Churchill Downs and Douglas Park there are a number of horses resting before beginning active training for the coming autumn season here. Locally, the racing begins here this fall at Douglas Park first, on Monday, September IS, and continues eight racing days until Tuesday, September 20. On Wednesday, September 27, the fall meeting begins at. Churchill Downs anil runs a similar number of racing days, ending on October 5. The racing then begins at Latouia on Saturday, October 7 and continues through until Saturday, October 28, a period of nineteen racing days. Already manager John Haehmeister lias announced the stakes for the Douglas Park and Latouia meetings, with as usual, the Louisville Cup with ,500 added as t lie big attraction at Douglas Park and the Latouia Cup with ,000 added as the feature race at the latter course. The Louisville Cup is two miles in distance, and the Latouia Cup is two miles and a quarter. These events are set to close for entries on Friday. August IS. As yet the stakes have not been announced for the coming meeting at Churchill Downs by secretary II. .0. Applegate, but they will consist of the usual annual autumn features at this famous course. In announcing the stakes to be run at Churchill Downs next fall, manager M. J. Winn lias delayed action, awaiting the proposed movement of the Kentucky State Racing Commission iu regard to their proposed gold cup race, for which the various Kentucky tracks are supposed to make bids in added money. This was the rule when the Kentucky Racing Commission added the gold cup to the Endurance Stakes at four miles, and all those races were run at Churchill Downs, the New Louisville Jockey Club outbidding the other tracks for these feature races annually. The fact that manager Haehmeister has already announced the stakes for Douglas Park and Latouia. and as the Kentucky Association has formally given no stakes at their fall meetings, t he presumption is that if such a race as the proposed gold cup is run iu Kentucky next fall, it will be decided at. the Churchill Downs course. As the distance of the St. Leger is the same route of ground as the proposed gold cup. it will ho easy to condition that stake to suit the Racing Commission, and add to it a sufficient sum to meet the requirements of a race with the proposed thousand dollar gold trophy added. Just what action the Racing Commission will suggest to the Kentucky tracks in the near fu-tur about this proposed gold cup remains to be seen. As the members of this governing body are at present in various parts of the country it looks as if it will be some days before they will agan go to a meeting upon the call of their chairman, Hon. J. N. Camden. This, of course, will continue to cause delay to manager M. J. Winn in announcing the fall stakes at the Downs. Roth he and secretary II. C. Applegate desire to give the Kentucky Commission every opportunity to run such a race, if as that body has already announced. it so desires to do. Rut gohl cup or not, the Downs will have its usual brilliant meeting this fall, and as many stakes with liberal added money as iu former years.
