: SELLING RACE RULE WORKING POORLY. How One Small Stable Accumulated a Respectable Sum Without Winning. Xcw York, July 31. An idea of the money to be gathered by indiscriminate bidding up of horses after winning selling races on eastern tracks is shown by a table compiled by the Evening Sun. The rule which permits this state of affairs was adopted last winter, being put on the books in an effort to rectify the old practice of dividing the surplus money between the associations and the owner of the second horse and keeping owners from entering high-class horses in cheap selling races. The operation of the new rule has not been attended witli gratifying results and it. will no doubt be changed. When a man can pile up such an amount of money by taking advantage of the conditions of the present selling race rules there should be ho doubt In the minds of the turf authorities as to amending the clause which permits these practices.
