MUCK DISSATISFACTION OVER STARTING. The question of starting has become a matter of bitter consideration, ami is more severely criticized at Newmarket than anywhere else. This is not as it should be, for it is only natural to expect that if perfection is to be readied it should be at the headquarters of the turf. The suaviter in mode principle is admirable in most instances, but does not apply to starting, which depends more on the fortiter in re. The ruling powers should look at it from that point of view, and the time lias come when something should be done in the direction of improvement, for it must not be forgotten that as many thousands are involved at the beginning as at the finish of a race, and the pubKc are not unnaturally tired of seeing their money thrown, in the street at the "other end." Someliting will have to be done or trouble must come. Loudon Sportsman.
