CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. Danny Maher. famous rider, has had a relapse, and is again seriously ill. Maher has been troubled with Illness for some years past. Jockey W. Ward, who rode Pas de Chance at Fort Erie, Monday, was suspended for three davs for interfering with Rhyme and Blue Grass Belie. Jockey II. Woods, only recently reinstated after a long suspension for an unsatisfactory ride on Buckhorn at Belmont. Park, has decided to go to Canada to rich? as a free lance. Through a telegraphic error. Beach Sand was erroneously reported as scratched from race 28319 at Dufferin Park, August 7. As a matter of fact the horse ran seventh, carrying 112 pounds, with jockey C. Peak up and odds of 10, 4 and 2. Th new conditions of selling races at Dufferin Park provide that the winner of such races may be claimed in the same manner as other entries, for the entered amount plus the value of the purse. The claimant must have a horse in the race. August Belmonts imported colt Hourless will be a starter in the Saratoga Special, barring accidents. He worked three-quarters in 1:14 handily Saturday, and on other occasions his trials in preparation for that big sporting event have been satisfactory. At Lingfield Pari:, England, last Monday the High Class Stakes of ,500 for two-year-olds was won by A. Raphaels gray colt Tagrag, by Chaucer Tagalie, with Hammond second and the Minora Via filly third. The winner was the favorite at 11 to 8 and eight started. His dam won the Epsom Derby of 1!12. A Milwaukee correspondent complains that one R. G. Bates of 200 23d St.. New York, solicits by mail money iu return for which he engages to furnish valuable "Information" in regard to racing and who, after receiving money, "does not semi anything iu return and refuses answers to telegrams, although he personally receives them." All of which would seem to make out the Bates person to be a common swindler. George Smith, the three-year-old star of the John Sanford establishment and winner of the Kentucky Derby, will be shipped from Saratoga to the Hurri-enna Farm at Amsterdam at once and retired for the season. This good colt went slightly amiss in Chicago previous to the running of the American Derby, and upon his return east it was deemed best to rest him until next season. A number of the Sanford yearlings may be sent to the sales market this fall. The monkey-on-a-stick style of riding evidently does not appeal to the West Australian owner-trainer, J. 5. F. Robinson, and he brought the matter up at the annual meeting of the Western Australian Turf Club, suggesting that the stipendiary stewards should be given instructions to compel boys to ride with longer stirrup leathers. The" chairman said the matter was one for the owners, and suggested that the latter should refuse to employ boys except under specified conditions.
