3 l l j 1 ; , 1 i . 1 ; ; " I s I : I i i "SOLLY" B. JOELS RACING -ENTERPRISES. Noted Breeder and Turfman Establishing a Great Stud Farm in South Africa. i Racing iu South Africa- lias been steadily on the j up grade for a long time, and will be still further benefited by Mr. S. B. Joels patronage after a lapse of some twenty years. It was during his visit to Johannesburg last winter that overtures were made to him to form a new stud out there, 3 and, being largely interested in South Africa affairs, he readily agreed, and at once set to work to select a team. He will start with a fine lot of well-bred horses, representing the strains of Polymelus, Sundridge, St. Simon and other high-class blood, from which later on he will build up a breeding , stud to supply his racing stable. It is his intention , to pay a prolonged visit next winter, and when he reaches the colony at the end of October or early : in November, he will have at least twenty-five horses in training by J. AV. Murray, at Rooysens. i hard by the central city of the gold and diamond mining district. Operations are to commence in earnest at the Christmas meeting, and that he is doUrmined to carry the scheme through thoroughly may be assumed from tin; fact that he is taking , "Donoghue to ride his horses, and afterwards will employ the services of a high-class rider under a three-years engagement. Negotiations are in progress, and if satisfactorily adjusted he will have a retainer on one of, if not actually, the most capable among the rising jockeys in this country. From his trainer he has already received a most encouraging report of the horses sent otit, till having done well since their arrival, with not a had mover among them, and all likely "to pay their way." Except for being ti bit back at the knee Poli-castro, by Polymelus, out of Queen of the Rivers is described as a fine type of horse, sure to win races if his legs stand hard ground, while St. Aladimir, by St. Denis out of Natalie is a great raking gelding, sound in all respects, but wanting time to acclimatise. Pologate. by Polymelus out of Porphyria is a strong, muscular, handy colt, just the sort for South African courses, has made an "auspicious start by winning a race iu the summer. He stands on the best of legs and feet, and is confidently expected to do well. St. Esprit looks like making a stayer, but Polygon did not bear the voyage Avell. anil it may be some tim:; before he is fit to do himself justice. Great holies are centered in Scotch and Polly, a good stamp of three-year-old, by Polymelus Highland Lassie, that ran second to Limoud for the Exeter Stakes. He has grand action and, although a little excitable on landing, has quieted down and should do well. Deuce is already a favorite, being a charming filly and racing- like, while, if rather light of frame and overgrown, Jess, a sister to Polegtite, is reported to have made considerable progress since her arrival, and with time should develop into something more than useful. Sea Dog and Sainters have since joined this first batch, and on their way to the same destination. The first band sent out consisted of Polystome, Parhelion, .heap Jack, Salome, AAild Pat and five well-bred yearlings. One cannot but feel regret at such an exodus, particularly as more are to follow. Here in England we may not see much more of the pink and green stripes this season, but Pom-mern is to have a cut in for the Champion Stakes which will thus be exceptionally interesting, for the entry includes Aolta. Hasta, Silver Tag, Aau-cluse and Sir Eager. It will, however, not be from this division that excitement will be aroused but from the three-year-olds, which are a formidable i lot. with Canyon, Piialaris, Clarissimus, Athcling. Fifinella, Figaro and Argos among them. I should I like to see them all go to the post, although in my opinion they will have bad luck if the crack is well; and certain it is that he will not run unless he is. This will probably be his last appearance, as it is not iu the least degree likely that he will be trained for tin; Jockey Club Cup, and we may take it for granted that his Cambridgeshire weight will be such that a ten pounds penalty will put him completely out of court, while defeat would be even worse, added to which his owner will be abroad when that race is decided. Mr. Joel will have a big show of stallions when Pommern retires from the turf to join Polymelus, Sunder. Long Set and St. Denis, by one or other of which till his mares have been covered this season with the single exception of Polkerris, which was put to Sunstar. It is hard to hear that Merry Agnes, dam of Ionimern. has missed to Polymelus, whose other mates were Sun Angel. Ornamental. Nathalie, St. Josephine. Stiudrop, Highland Lassie, Doxa. and Dona Ana, but. most encouraging reports come to hand concerning the first foals by Long Set. This young stallion litis been afforded a good chance with such mares as Ronnie lassie, Harania, Gener-euse, Fairplay, Polydora, Polydamna, Polycreta, Queen of tin; Rivers, Gaybird and Smasher. Sunder has been used for Ottersell, Polymela, Pity Phtie. St. Katharine. Sheelah. Shieliti, Every woman. . Kate Glover. Crissa. Jelly. Gourouli, Lady Flo. Polyooley, and Persuasion, while St. Denis covered Negotiation, Manchuria, Give In, Volga River, Tirynthia, Im- pulsive and Long Sets dam, Italic Perdue. Polymelus is credited with upwards of thirty foals this season, including a half-brother to Sunstar from Doris, brother to Pommern from Merry Agnes, a half-brother to Clarissimus from Quintessence, and fillies out of Glacier and Cheshire Cat. The idea that Mr. Joel is likely to retire from racing in England is negatived by the fact that he has still eighteen yearlings at Polegato ready to go into training, consisting of colts by Poly-I melus Ornamental, by Sunder Polkerris. by Ioly- melus Sun Angel,, by Polymelus Smasher, by Sunder Gourouli. by Sunder Aolga River, by Sun-: der Jelly, by Sunder St. Katharine, by Sunder Merry Agnes, ti brother to Maiden Erlegh by Poly-I melus Plum Tart, and by Polymelus Simdrop. Tin; fillies are by Sunder Doxa. by Sunder Poly-i mela. by Polymelus Bonnie Lassie, by Prince Palatine Nathalie, by Polymelus St. Josephine, by St. Dennis Grissa. and by Polymelus Dona Ana. In addition to these there are twenty-three foals in the paddocks at Maiden Erlegh, including fillies and colts by Polymelus, Sunder, Long Set. St. Dennis. Sunstar, and Aalais. Pomuiertinia, I hear, is not in foal, in spite of frequent visits to Amadis, and will continue in training. According to till accounts she is doing well again, and may be seen out for an engagement before the end of the season. This grand-looking sister to Iom- mern "was highly tried as a two-year-old, and i j when amiss ran right well in the One Thousand Guineas, the only race in which she has yet taken part. Polychroiny by Polymelus Sundrop, was supposed to be one of Mr. Joels best two-year-olds, but unfortunately met with an accident through the carelessness of a motor cyclist, who ran into and cut him about a lot, so that he Is not likely to run again this year. "Vigilant" ii London Sportsman of August 10.
