Almost as popular a victory as Campfires was that of Spur in the Jerome Handicap. The redoubtable little three-year-old was asked to carry the heavy impost of 130 pounds and meet high class opposition. His victory was a great tribute to the merit of the son of King James, for after getting clear of interference in the stretch. Malachite loomed up dangerously and he shook her off, only to have to lie driven out to withstand the rush of Crimper, which came with a fine burst of speed at the end. Spur was ridden in masterly manner by Loftus and holding his advantage to the end, won by a neck. The race was worth 82.350 to the winner. The Autumn Cup, a higliweight handicap for gentlemen riders, was featured by rough riding on the jurt of Mr. J. Tucker, which caused the eventual disqualification of his"runuut.
