I t 1 1 : 1 1 1 : C0NNAUGHT PARK MEETING CLOSES. Eutterseotch II. Wins Again and with Lady Mexican Scores a Double for Owner Oots. Ottawa, Ont., September 2. The final meeting of the Connaught. Park Jockey Club for the season of 1910 was brought to a close with the running of todavs program. A large crowd was in attendance and. despite small fields and heavy track conditions, good sport was witnessed. The feature race, the Canadian Juvenile Handicap, a dash of three-quarters for two-year-olds, was won by the imported colt Butterscotch II., which races in the colors of Howard Oots. He beat Kathryn Gray by a long margin and was going away at tin; finish. . The Oots stable scored a double when Lady Mexican managed to get home in front of Paymaster bv the smallest of margins in the third race. It .was a close thing between the two. with Paymaster coming and Lady Mexican quitting. The latter was in tlie deepest going and tired badly in the last sixteenth. Encouraged by the success of the meeting just closed, the management of the Connaught Park Jockey Club contemplates some changes with a view of making the course more popular with the horsemen and patrons. They contemplate employing an experienced man to take charge of the grounds and look after the beautifying of the plant and the proper care of the track. The position has been offered to John Shields, a practical horseman who has had considerable experience in this line. Mr. Shields assisted in the construction of the Tijuana course and built a first-class training track for K. It. Thomas, when his father raced a stable in partnership with that gentleman. The suggestion has also been made, and will probably be adopted, to bed down the stalls of the horsemen and to provide wagons to convey their tra:s to and from the j loading chutes to the stables. John ITynn of Prcscott, who raced a stable on the Canadian circuit a couple of years ago, contemplates returning to the sport. lie has commissioned a well known horseman to purchase a couple or platers for him this fall. William Oliver left with his horses this morning for I.lue Itonnets. He announced that he would race his horses at one of the winter tracks, probably Havana. The condition book for the fall meeting of the Ontario Jockey Club was distributed among the horsemen this morning by Joseph McLennan. The club has been extremely liberal in the matter of added money to the dilTerent races. In addition to the number of stakes to be run during the meeting overnight handicaps ranging in value from 00 to ,000 are given every day. These, together with the liberal overnight purses, a majority of which are of 00 value, should attract some stables from New York. The steeplechase element has also been well catered to. Resides the Woodbine Autumn Steeplechase Stakes and the Ilendrio Memorial Steeplechase Stakes, there will be a jumping race every day. The Michaelmas Hauicap, ,000 added, for two-year-olds at. three-quarters, is another attraction. The best stables racing on the circuit have reserved stalls and John Whalen will ship Roots from New York to start in the Toronto Autumn Cup, witli ,500 added, to be run on the opening day of the meeting. There is a list of thirty-four eligibles to this stake. The two-year-old Joanna II. came out of her race yesterday lame and will be let up on for a time." She was excused from starting by the stewards today.
