LOUISVILLE CHOICES FAIL DODGE BEATEN BY HODGE AND LEO SKOL-NY IN THE MAIN RACE OF THE DAY. Square Dealer Wins from Pernod Sleoth Defeated 1 by Old Lahore Old Charter First in a Close Finish Track Gossip. 1 Louisville. Ky., September 29. A. IC. Maeombers crack colt Dodge fell a victim today in the three-quarters handicap at Churchill Downs, for which lie was tin: heavily supported favorite. Hodge ran :i good race and was returned the winner from Leo Skolny, but Dodge barely boat Fleetabelle for ; third money. Hodge was raced in the best going for the entire way and drew out in the last eighth. Dodge because of racing through the worst going succumbed easily when it came to the final strides. Those who pinned their faith to favorites experienced difficulty from the outset, as the choices were bowled over with regularity in the first five races. The difficult track was held mostly to blame. The racing was interesting however, and the finishes were exciting. The first disappointment came when Ponrod succumbed by a scant half length to Square Dealer. Old Charter, an outsider, furnished another upset when he got tip in the last stride to beat M. Uert Thurman. Highland Lassie, in the third race, disposed of the favorite. Nettie AAalcutt, after a well maintained stretch drive and the A. 11. linker, representative, Sleeth, fell a victim to Lahores cyclonic rush in the last seventy yards of the fourth nice. A drop in the temperature and the dilTicult track conditions brought with it a slump in the attendance and volume of betting. Manager .lohn Hachmeister, discussing the test suit filed bv the Douglas Park track, said it was without prejudice to the Kentucky- State Racing Commission and that it was within the rights of the club to have a court of competent jurisdiction review any act of the commission. B. Phillips has had his colt Limlly gelded and will turn him out until next spring. Howard Oots returned yesterday from England, where he bought fifteen yearlings at the recent Newmarket sales. Eleven of the youngsters are colts. They were shipped from London last Monday, and on their arrival in this country, will be transferred at once to Lexington, where they will be wintered and broken. Mr. Oots stated that the trend of conditions at present in England is favorable towards an early resumption of racing there and that yearlings are bringing much better prices in anticipation of the restoration of the sport. F. .1. Nolan, owner of the Bevcrwycl: Stable, telegraphed for stall reservations for twenty horses that he intends to ship here at once. The racers are at present at Havre de Grace and Saratoga and will finish the season at Latonia. AV. II. ISaker bought back Walter II. Iearce from Frank I. Weir. The latter bought the colt at Latonia for .,000 after lie hud won a stake race. Todays visitors included Jefferson Livingston, C. AV. MeCullough, and G. Rasmusseu from Chicago. Mr. Livingston came over to confer with his trainer relative to winter plans, bat nothing definite was decided on. After Nettie AValeutts defeat in the third race, .1. M. Henry. Jr., claimed her for ,100. Henry was represented in the race by Elizabeth Thompson.
