LAUREL OUTSIDERS FIRST : j UNEXPECTED WINNERS PREVAIL OVER THE PUBLIC CHOICES IN SEVERAL CASES. Port Light Proves Best in the Carrollton Handicap : and Defeats Crimper Runes Wins Again Polonium Takes Race and Changes Owners. Baltimore, Md., October 10. Surprises -were frequent :it Laurel this afternoon, a majority of the winners coming from the ranks of the outsiders. Tim program was made up of well-matched fields, with the Carrollton Handicap, a dash of three-quarters, as the feature. This raee was marred by an accident at the start, which caused two of the dozen starters to he left. Just as the harrier was sprung Marso Henry swerved and hit. Ormesdale and the result was that both were left. The winner came from the stable of W. I. Orr. whose 1 lam burg gelding. Port Light, linishing with a rush, passed the tiring pacemaker in the final eighth and won going away. Crimper, after beginning slowly, finished with a rush and just managed to get up in the final stride to beat Regiua by a nose for second place. Runes, which has regained the good form he displayed early in the year, scored his second victory of the meeting when he won the mile and one-sixteenth handicap. Iarrington rode him with good judgment, saving him carefully to the homestretch, where he went up to the leaders with a rush and in the final quarter drew away into a cantering lead. The imported colt Polonium changed hands after winning the first race. J. W. Hedrick advanced him from 00 to ,100 and secured him at that figure. The riders of Marse Henry and Ormesdale were not held accountable by the starter for being left at the post in the Carrollton Handicap. "It was no fault of the boys," said Mr. Cassidy after the race. "It was simply an accident." During the entire year starter Cassidy lias not imposed a single fine on any of the jockeys, and on only two occasions has he found it necessary to suspend one. The fillys injuries are serious enough to throw her out of training for the remainder of the season. E. Itathman has taken over the management of the apprentice rider B. Kleeger and will in the future make the lads engagements. Kleeger will accompany Rathmnu to Cuba. The latter will train a public stable next winter and is gathering a string to ship to Oriental Park. Stabling has been reserved for the Greentree Stables Gainer and Hubbub, which are expected to arrive from Piping Rock tomorrow. They will be trained by A. Simons. Top o th Morning stepped on a stone in his race yesterday, which accounted for his lameness after the race. He was still sore this morning, but trainer Shields does not consider his injury of a serious nature. The 13. A. Burke jumpers, Quel Bonhour and Light Arms, formerly trained by Lewis W.
