NASSOVIANS CESARE WITCH WEIGHT. Among the other Cesarewitch candidates Mr. Sanfords good three-year-old, Nassovian, has been backed recently in a number of "doubles" with horses in the Cambridgeshire. The long race is one in which many three-year-olds in the past have gained distinction, and, as a matter of fact, no fewer than thirty-five colts and fillies of that age have triumphed out of a total of seventy-six races. In other words, young uns have won almost half of the total number of races for the Cesarewitch. AVhethcr Nassovian is within measurable distance of St. Gatien, however, remains to be seen. The last-named colt galloped to victory in 1884 under 122 pounds, and, according to his owner, the late Mr. "Jack" Hammond, he would probably have won almost as easily as lie did had he been weighted at 133 pounds. All the same, Nassovian has been allotted the substantial weight, for a colt of his age, of 118 pounds, and were he to win he would rank as the next best three-year-old winner of the race after St. Gatien, with the solitary exception of Robert the Devil, which, in 18S0, carried to victory precisely the same burden as that now allotted to Mr. Sanfords son of William the Third and Aeneration II. Robert the Devil, however, had better public credentials than Nassovian, for he was undoubtedly the unluckiest horse in the, world to be beaten by Bend Or for the Derby, and before winning the Cesarewitcli he had simply romped home for the St. Leger from Lord Rose-borys filly, Cippolata, which, subsequently, at an advantage of seven pounds, was beaten more easily than before in the Cesarewitcli. Up to the present the most heavily-weighted three-year-old winners of the big handicap, with the exception of St. Gatien and Robert the Devil, arc Faugh a Bal-lagh 1844 and Julius 1807. each of which carried 112 pounds to victory. From this it will be seen that Nassovian is. set no mean task. "Vigilant" in London Sportsman.
