LEOCIIARES WEIGHTED OUT BADLY AWAY AND MAKES UP MUCH GROUND, BUT ins BIG IMPOST TELLS. Columbus Handicap Falls to Speedy A. N. Akin Xylon Loses Through a 3ad Start Gwyn E. Tompkins to Retire from Racing. Baltimore, Md., October 32. Edward Trotter. Whose horses have been showing particularly good form at Laurel, added the Columbus Handicap to his successes of the present meeting when his fast sprinter A. X. Akin tool; Leochares into camp this afternoon. The race was a dash of three-quarters, and brought a speedy field to the post. Leoehares. top weight at 132 pounds, was heavily bached anil went to the post an odds-on favorite. He was the. best horse and would have won but for a poorly judged ride by Ilaynes. Looch:ire:i appeared to be in splendid condition while going to the post and, when the start came, he left the barrier with the leaders. In some manner he got into a tangle that marked the start and, when the field finally got straightened out, he was last. At the head of the stretch his chances of being placed seemed slim, but in the final eighth he closed up witli a great burst of speed and pasnnd all but A. Is. Akin, which won by a length and a half. Ilaynes wa3 also unfortunate in the fifth race in which he had the mount on Xylon. He left, the post behind the others, then got cut off when rounding the turn into the backstretch. In the last half Xylon gained steadily and at the finish was going fastest of all. Holiday won the race, coming from behind and beating Trial by Jury by a half length. It. L. Bressler has taken up the filly Peggy L. that lias boon turned out at the William Jennings Farm at Mt. Washington, Md., since last spring. She will be fitted for a winter campaign. Mr. Bressler now has three horses in his string. John Whalen will Ehip Boots to Kentucky on Tuesday next. The horse is in fine fettle just now. He worked a mile and a quarter in 2:10 a3 part of his preparation for his engagement in the Washington Handicap, to be run at Laurel on Saturday. James Hilton has returned to Baltimore after an absence of several days in Tcw York. Mr. Hilton is looking after the shipment of horses to Cuba and reports that the outlook for the meeting at Oriental Park is more than encouraging. Jockey 11, McDermott accompanied the J. F. Sweeney stable, which shipped to Windsor this afternoon. J. W. Iledrick, Jr., figured quite prominently in selling race bidding this afternoon. He boosted Kilts 00 over her entered price after she Avon the first race, then secured the jumper March Court after he won the second race. The latter cost him 00, an advance of 00 over his entered price. Jockey Allen was shaken up a bit as a result of his fall when Cynosure went down at the fifth fence in the steeplechase. There wore no bones broken, however. He was about again later in the afternoon. Promoter fell badly lame and it is doubtful if he will be able to go to the post again this year. Gwyn It. Tompkins announced that at the conclusion of the present year he would give up training. In the future he will look after his breeding interests. Mr. Tompkins is associated with E. M. Weld in an extensive breeding establishment iii Virginia. Their place is located at Warrenton and is known as Glenburnie Farm. They have about ten mares at present and Mr. Tompkins will pick up about a dozen more here and in Kentucky this fall. The young mares will be mated with G. T. Gwathemys stallion. Sea Horse II. and the older mares will be sent to Kentucky for mating with A. B. Hancocks Wrack. Mr. Tompkins purchased Huntress a few days ago and at the end of the racing season she will be retired to the stud. Arrangements have been made to turn over the horses in training next spring to John Kermath. who will do the training for the Glenburnie Farm. Mr. Tompkins had a letter from Kermath a few days ago which stated that he had fully recovered his health and that all signs of tubercular baccilli had disappeared from his system when the last examination took place on June 10. C. Smooth will do the riding for the stable. Stouohenge was jumped on while racing today and badly cut down. Laurel work-outs over a fast track today were: Alvord Five-eighths in 1:03.
