CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. In reply to a question in the legislative assembly of AMctoria, tin? chief secretary said that sixty-nine country race clubs had applied for licenses for the year commencing March 31, 1910. The old-time Australian cross-conntry rider, T. Halligan, Avho Avon the A. R. C. Grand National hurdle race on Aquarius in 1900, and who has been engaged in farming for some years, has enlisted for active service. An effort will bo made this Avinter to have the legislature pass a bill Avhich shall put racing in California under the control of a commission as it is in Kentucky, NeA-ada and other states, and to permit betting on race results by the pari-mutuel system Avithin the enclosure Avhere such racing is being held and nowhere else. The death of Redmond Quain of OttaAA-a removes from the directorate of the Connaught Park Jockey Club a strong factor in the ultimate success of that organization. Mr. Quain, a good sportsman and keenly interested always in a good horse, had strong and liberal views, and his opinions AAere held in high esteem by his association. C. J. Casey has arrived at Latonia with the Irish-bred horse Fair Mac and the English-bred colt Gunbearer, both belonging to Hugh Grant BroAvne. Fair Mac is a sure starter in the Latonia Cup race in which lie Avill be piloted by T. Rice, AAho rode him in the Ontario Jockey Club Cup race, a long-distance event for Avhich he accounted at AAoodbine, September 30. T. C. McDowell has a promising band of yearlings at the Kentucky Association course at Lexington, and fifteen of them Avorked, quarters Sunday, their time ranging from 23 to 24. the fastest being the bay filly by The Manager out of Fancywood. Mr. McDoAvell expressed himself as Avell satisfied with the shoAving made by the youngsters. "I made no attempt at sensationalism," he said, "for none of the yearlings are-sufficiently forward in their training to permit their being set doAA-n. as the expression goes, for the best that is in them."
