AN AUSTRALIAN TRAINERS LUCK. A few years ago C. Wheeler was regarded as an unlucky trainer, and Tulkcroos seconds in the Caul-field and Melbourne Cups of 1903, and a similar placing by Delenda in the 1909 Australian Cup. went towards upholding that idea. A couple of years later, however, his luck underwent a change, and since then the following important races have been among these credited horses prepared by him: Newmarket Handicap, 1911 Queen o Scots. Australian Cup, 1911 The Parisian. Melbourne Cup, 1911 The Parisian. Oakleigh riate, 1912 Queen o Scots. Toorak Handicap, 1914 Ratlilea. Maribyrnong Trial Stakes, 1914 Red Signal. Maribyrnong Plate, 1914 Red Signal. Caulfield Guineas, 1915 Patrobas. Victoria Derby, 1915 Patrobas. Melbourne Cup, 1915 Patrobas. V. It. C. St. Leger, 1910 Patrobas. Maribyrnong Trial Stakes, 1910 Ittnimon. V. A. T. C. Debutant Stakes, 1910 Kemmon. Caulfield Cup, 191C Shepherd King. I have not attempted to give all the winners trained by Wheeler, but merely those of most account during the past half-dozen years, and their value in prize-money totals only a little short of 75,000. When Mr. Falkiner removed Red Signal from AVheelers care in the autumn of 1915 the latter was naturally annoyed, as he probably reckoned he was being deprived of an excellent chance of training a Victoria Derby winner. Such is the luck of the sport, however, that in Patrobas almost unheard of as a two-year-old the Derby winner did come from Wheelers stable, while Red Signal failed to live up to expectations, based on two-year-old form.
