A isa- JOCKEY J. McTAGGART MOST SUCCESSFUL OF THE EIDERS OF WINNING TWO-YEAR-OLDS DURING THE YEAR There is an old theory, now somewhat discarded, that the more experienced jockeys are desirable for mounts on two-year-olds, something that is made possible ordinarily by the scale of weights in two-year-old races but the more general schooling of the youngsters at the barrier has made such distinctions of comparatively minor importance, if they ever possessed real value. Nevertheless the racing novitiates provide no little test for the skill of the riders, and the appended table, which shows the successful jockeys on all two-year-olds on American tracks during the first nine months of the present racing season that is, up to October 1 may prove interesting. By October the two-year-olds actually in racing can hardly be regarded as longer being novices. An analysis of the figures does not bear out the theory that the old-time riders fare best with the two-year-olds, although such veterans as Troxler and T. Davies seem to have done considerably better witli the youngsters than with other mounts, comparatively speaking. Twenty-three of Troxlers thirty-eight winning mounts for the year at the end of September had been on two-year-olds, and just one-half of T. Davies successes, both in finishing first and in getting second and third places, has been with the young racers. Rut such old-timers as Butwell, Buxton, Keogh, Connolly and Pickens found no greater fortune awaiting their two-year-old mounts than attended their general saddle successes. L. Gentry, who is now in his sixth year in the saddle, was more especially successful with the turf beginners, but he cannot exactly be placed as yet in the list of old-timers. Lykes and Lapaille, two other boys of less experience than Gentry, were also more than ordinarily skillful in handling the two-year-olds. The same applies to T. McTaggart, who has been riding eight years. It is J. McTaggart, the younger brother of Tom, who is to be hailed as the champion rider of two-year-olds for 1916, and Johnny began riding only in 1913, when he blazed across the turf horizon witli 111 victories in his first season in the saddle. Up to October 1, J. McTaggart had ridden forty-one two-year-old winners, was second on them thirty times, and twenty-two times third. Roscoe Goose, who is a bit of a veteran at riding, ranks next to J. McTaggart in two-year-old successes, but Roscoe was good on them at all ages, and not conspicuously so on two-year-olds. Then, following Goose in two-year-old successes this year, come F. Murphy, who began riding in 1913; L. Gentry, Troxler and Taplin, the latter with a big bunch of all kinds of winners, and then F. Robinson, the leading winner of the year for all kinds of races. Robinson did not break into riding until 1914, and possibly for that reason may not have been entrusted with so many two-year- 1 old mounts as his rivals. However, that may be, he had ridden but twenty-two two-year-old winners out of 133 winners of all kinds by the end of September.
