CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. Steeplechase jockey Harry Simpson is through as a rider. He now weighs close to ISO pounds and he is still "going up." Jockey Mack Garner won the gold shaving set offered by D. W. Prathor for riding the most Avin-ners the first Aveek of the Juarez meeting. John Daly, a right good jockey a feAV years back, is traveling for the Goodrich Tire Company and doing Avell in his new line of endcaA-or. It is said, in all probability, the meeting at Hot Springs Avill begin on February 25, the Saturday following the close of the Business Mens Association meeting at New Orleans. Thomas McCroary, trainer of the A. J. Davis horses, recently had the nine-year-old gelding Race-brook blistered and expects the old gelding to do Avell OA-er the Jumps next year. Hunt Club racing made a decided hit in Virginia last season and bigger things in that line will be attempted in 1917. Kdward McLean of Washington and J. Temple Gwathniey Avill be responsible for two meetings next season. J. D. Colin, the leading owner in France during the season recently closed, is said to have made an offer to Mrs. Herman I!. Duryea for the breeding establishment and racing stable, Avhich the late H. I?. Duryea maintained in France. George Johnson has turned out on the Bayless farm the se-en thoroughbreds, Avhich John May-berry Avas training for him, and it is his intention to have them run out through the Avinter. In consequence of this trainer Mayberry is looking about for a feAV horses to take to New Orleans for the coming meeting. Nash Turner is on his AA-ay to Aiken, S. C, taking a fine band of imported yearlings and two tAvo-year-olds, belonging to T. P. Thome, Avith him. These young thoroughbreds were imported by Del-bert Reiff from France during the summer and Avere sold at Saratoga during the meeting there. They Avill be prepared for racing on the Ncav York tracks. While the Light Horse were galloping hard one of the horses came down, says an Australian paper, and rolled OA-er his rider, who Avas left limp and motionless on the sand. Bookmaker John Fay, of Cincinnati, Avho with his Avife has recently spent a fortnight at San Diego, is a great booster for the racing plant at Tijuana. He Avas most favorably impressed Avith conditions as he found them the plnnt itself, the high clcss of the racing officials, the racing, the big attendance, the strength of the betting ring as reflected in the number and the calibre of the layers, and the heaty betting.
