PERCENTAGE OP WINNING FAVORITES. An Old Subject Intelligently Discussed With the Aid of Track Statistics in Maryland. Inasmuch as fully 75 per cent, of the people who patronize the race track wager on the favorites in some position, either straight, place or show, the following statistical features of the running of the public choices at the fall meetings on the Maryland tracks may prove interesting and valuable, says Albert Gascoigne in the New York Sun. In the minds of a majority runs the old persist- I ent belief that occurrences of chance for the present or future are in some way affected by occurrences immediately preceding, but disconnected physically. For instance, most backers basing their operations on the favorite straight, place or show think that if three favorites have won or placed or showed the chances against the fourth one winning, placing or showing and vice versa. This would be so if we were drawing balls from a bag full of red and black balls; the more red ones drawn the smaller the chance of drawing another red one and so on. But this docs not hold true in turf speculation, as it is only when one deals with an infinitely large number of races that one can count on infinitely small variations in the mathematical results, but racing does not go on for infinity, therefore anything and everything may happen. Statistics prove that the runs of winning and losing public choices occur in cycles with the percentage of winners at the close always about the same, varying but little from year to year. Take any given one thousand races and at the close the percentage of winning favorites will be about 39 per cent.; there will be rnns of losers and winners occurring in sequence, but in the end the per cent, will be maintained.
