FUTURITY WINNER, MARTIMAS, IS DEAD. Breaks Leg Follovrfng Brief Sickness at Valley Farm and Has to Be Destroyed. Hamilton, Ont., December 13. The leading Valley Farm sire, the Futurity Avinner, Mnrtimas, is dead. Until stricken Avith colic last Thursday he was apparenty in the best of health, but the next day he broke a leg, and had to be destroyed. He AAas the largest Avinning horse oAvned in Canada, his earnings amounting to 1,590, beginning with the Niagara Stakes at Fort Erie in 1S9S as a two-year-old. That AAas his most successful season from the earnings point of view, as his record included his success in the Futurity, trained by Eddie Why to and ridden by Harry LeAvis, in a field of tAventy-three starters. The folloAving season he won the Canadian Derby nt Fort Erie, and the next year the Toronto Cup, AVhile he A-as also a Avinner three times as a fiA-e-year-ohJ. Though ho Avas practically confined to the mares at Valley Farm after his transfer to the stud, his progeny have Avon about 0,000. They include the Kings Plate winners, Kelvin and Shimoncse, and one of the fastest of Canadinn-breds, Slipper Day. Martimas Avas a chestnut horse, foaled in 1S96, and therefore tAvcnty years old at the time of his death. He Avas by imported Candlemas, brother to St. Blaise, from the Bramble mare, Biggonet. and Avas bought as n yearling by the late William Hendrie, who had a great fondness for him as :i gallant race horse and a son of a good mare. Mr. Hendrie never forgot seeing Biggonet win nt Saratoga after being more than two hours at the post, and AA-as determined to have her colt when he was offered at auction, even though other good judges near home did not hold such a high opinion of him as a prospect.
