x, rj TWO GOOD TWO-YEAR-OLDS LEAD IN THE STABLE EARNINGS OF THIS YEAR E0R SAMUEL ROSS J l. "Cltimatum, the two-year-old by Ultimus Speedmast, that was hailed early in the racing season as not only the star of the stable of Samuel Boss, but also as one of the really promising youngsters of the I year, had to take second place in a summary of the years winnings of his stable to another two-year-old. Crank, the bay gelding by Celt Crosspatch. There is no question, however, about Ultimatums speed. The Adirondack Handicap, at Saratoga, which was his most valuable victory, was easily achieved. Crank owes his lead in the stables winnings to his trio of victories in the Pimlico Nursery and the Grab Bag and Albany Handicaps at Saratoga, although lie won a purse in addition and was once third, but was seven times unplaced. In both the Grab Bag and Albany Handicaps lie finished just ahead of Deer Trap, and in the former race was generally accredited with winning a lucky victory, as there was a straggling start, but the colt came right back, with a diminished advantage in the weights, and repeated the trick, so far as Deer Trap was concerned, in the Albany Handicap. Toward the end of the season Crank did not fare so well, but his showing for the year, and that of Ultimatum, must be sufficient to cause Mr. Boss to look forward hopefully to three-year-old events in 1917.
