LIVELY RACING AT HAYANA J. J. LILLIS PREVAILS IN THE FEATURE RACE, BUT BY A NARROW MARGIN. Narcissus Wins at the First Time of Asking King Tuscan Takes a Race for Bedwell Soldier Outstays Ambrose. Havana, Cuba, Deeemlier 10. Trainer O. P. Burke sent through a good one in the first race at Oriental Park this afternoon when his filly, Narcissus, by Samson Flower, which never before had faced the starter, proved to be the best of a field of maiden two-year-olds by winning in good style. Narcissus was saved behind the Transvaal filly. Immense to the stretch, then took the lead to win easily by a couple of lengths from the early pacemaker. Narcissus was ridden by Knight and looks like she might beat better ones in the future. The field was strung out behind the first two horses, Mae Murray and Otsego being the closest to the two main contenders throughout. Jockey Knight made it two straight in the sec. end race, which was a three-quarter mile contest for horses of all ages. He had the mount on the favorite, King Tuscan, which after getting away in the middle of the field, worked his way through to the front and led the way home, with speed iu reserve. Thesieres. the second choice in the betting, was always the one King Tuscan had had to beat. Thesieres got away into the lead, was the early pacemaker and then stood a long, hard drive gamely iu a futile effort to catch King Tuscan, after the latter had raced into the lead. The third race was a five-eighths dash, with some of the better class of sprinters engaged. .1. .1. Lillis was thought to have the race at his mercy and was made a 1 to 3 favorite, but it proved to be a false price. Due to the sharp competition put up by the two-year-old Friendless, from the stable of L. C. Smith, it was nip and tuck between the pair at the finish, the two-year-old having the advantage at the start. The older horse was pressed to his limit to get up in the final sixteenth and only got his nose in front in the last stride. Friendless beat Plumose three lengths for second place. The latter was coming fast after a slow beginning. Yorkville was exhausted in trying to keep pace with Friendless in the first half of the race. Soldier, quoted at a good price in the betting, proved the best horse at the weights assigned, by defeating Ambrose and Maxims Choice, the favorites, easily. The speculators got a rude jolt at the start of Hie fifth race, when Uncle Will, the favorite, was left at the post. He was fractious and, finally, when the flag fell, refused to go. The race, which was at a mile, was won by After Night, a well-backed second choice. The three choices Hedge Rose, Rose "Water and Louise Stone, finished noses apart in the last race. The time of todays races indicates improvement !! tin; course. V. P. Keed has sold Refugee to G. Fenwick.
