CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. William Ilogan lias shipped twelve thoroughbreds, belonging to the Sunset Stable, to Churchill Downs, Louisville, Ky., where they will be wintered. Three jumpers and several yearlings are included iu the string. There is little doubt that A. 1C. Macomber will enter all his crack three-year-olds in Kentucky stakes next year and North Star, his most recent importation from England, will be named for the Kentuekj Derby, the winning of whicli is one of Mr. Maeonibers cherished ambitions. The broodmares Early Love dam of Lean Leach and Warsaw, and Sanetissinia dam of Dick Baker and Blllie Baker, have been purchased by E. L. Davis, of the Itockwood Stud, from Hinde and Baker. Davis also has bought the two-year-old filly Sarita from Andrew Hawkins, of Lawrence-burg. Lytle, the crack Texas two-year-old. whicli started favorite iu a race at Juarez Tuesday and. after leading the field, bled badly, will likely be thrown out of training for the remainder of the meeting. Lytle was leased by Frank D. Weir, the Kentucky turfman, from Wade McLeniore, the Texas breeder. The clause in the bill regulating race tracks passed on Wednesday at Quebec, which puts a tax on bookmakiug, is as follows: "Any person selling, recording or receiving bets, wagers or pools otherwise than under the parl-mutuel system shall obtain a license from the collector of Revenue upon payment of 00 a day." An interesting item of news from Holland is that the law whicli was passed five years ago forbidding bookmakiug and the use of the totalizator on Dutch race courses is to be rescinded. The reason for the removal of the prohibition is that It has caused great injury to horse breeding in Holland. That racing cannot flourish unless accompanied by some form of speculation everyone possessing practical acquaintance with the subject is well aware. Similarly it has been made plain since the beginning of the war, how grievously the horse breeding industry lias been affected by the closing of many of our race courses, and in the circumstances the lesson from Holland is one that should not lightly be passed by. London Sportsman.
