BACKERS OF BERMUDIAN FORTUNATE. Rough Riding Nearly Brings About Disqualification of Favorite Jockey Taylor Suspended. El Paso, Texas, December 27. Backers of Ber-mudian, a strong favorite in the first race today, had "a narrow squeeze for their money, despite the fact that the horse was first home by a margin of four lengths. At the sixteenth post, jockey X. Taylor, rider of Bermudian, after racing in close behind Belle Bird from the start, pulled over sharply toward the rail and cut off Circulate, which was coming gamely and which had to pull up sharply to avoid being thrown over the fence. Then Bermudian went on and easily beat the tiring Belle Bird, while Circulate also came on to win second money. The stewards let the race stand, but put jockey Taylor on the ground for five days for his rough riding. Pickagain, favorite for the two-year-old race, proved clearly best. He was off slowly and next to the rail, which forced Tullett to pull out and go around the others, . but he did so and won by two lengths from Cousin Bob, the pacemaker The latter hung on gamely. King and Fausett presented a check when they claimed Clumsy Kate out of the third race Monday and J. J. Quinlau asked that the check be paid out of his account. The stewards decided that the transaction was irregular. K. Spence also had a claim in for the filly and she was awarded to him.
