SHOWERS AT NEW ORLEANS DOWNFALL NOT SUFFICIENT TO AFFECT THE GOING AND FAST TIME IS RECORDED. Whirling Dun Vanquishes Good Opponents in the St. Charles Hotel Handicap — Squeeler Takes a Race. New Orleans, La., January 13. — An immense throng was again on hand to witness the racing • ct the Fair Grounds this afternoon, the threatening weather seemingly holeling no terrors for them. A heavy downpour of rain fell while the horses were at the post for the third race and continued until after the dicision of the feature race, the St. Charles Hotel Handicap, worth 60 net to the winner. The drenching the course received seemed to do it good, for fast time was recorded in the two sprinting dashes, in which the better grade of starters met. The sport was spirited with close finishes in most of the races. C. W. Clarks good colt Whirling Dun triumphed in the St. Charles Hotel Handicap after a well sustained stretch drive, Fizer finishing second with the first time starter Fruit Cake in third I lace. The latter was the hope of the easterners, •vhile Whirling Dun ruled a slight favorite with the Livingston pair, Bullion and Diamond next in demand. Bullion showed signs of lameness when going to the- barrier and retired from contention after going .hree-eighths. C. K. G. Billings Grundy, one of the starters in the race, wheeled as the barrier was released and was left at the post. The high weight handicap which followed the stake- feature held out much interest and resulted in a victory for Seiueeler, which ran to his best form this afternoon and defeated J. J. Murdock, the favorite and Prince of Como. Red Rover, which scored in his initial start on New Years Day. again showed a splendid effort by outstaying Thinker in the two-year-old race after a hard effort in which he shovved gameness by standing a terrific drive. Easter Greetings and I.algcc figured in a hard drive in the second race, I ist-r Greetings just managing to get up in the last stride to win by a nose. After the finish W. C. Semple claimed the winner for . H. D. Brown, manager of the Havana track, was among todays visitors. He has been confined to his room at a local hotel with illness and this was his first visit to the track. Impression, which was claimed by Harry Fink out of the closing race Friday, has been turned over to J. G. Busby to train. Bullion and Grundy came out of their races this afternoon showing symptoms of lameness. There is talk of probable racing in Jacksonville next fall, under the auspices of a Business Mens Association. It is said that over 5,000 worth of stock has already been subscribed for the project. Jockey Gourley was suspended for three days by the starter for disobedience while at the post in the second race. D. Wolmerdorf claimed Mikifula, after that horses victory, paying for him ,000. A. C. Nie-huuse, in the same race, got Petlar for 00. Ed Trotter advanced Woodward, winner in the laat rae-e, from 00 over his entered price of .*2.200, but failed to get him. Baby Lynch was returned to his former stable when W. A. Burtt-sch"ll. acting for the Columbia Stable, claimed her for ,900. There were twenty -five entries made for the Gentilly Handicap to be run next Saturday. The ran is at a mile and a sixteenth with ,000 added.
