CHURCHILL DOWNS SPRING STAKES. Nominations to the Kentucky Derby with Its New 5,000 Endowment in Order. To close for entries at midnight of Thursday. February 1, the New Louisville Jockey Club has announced its usual list of stake races for its coming spring meeting. In number and names they are unchanged from last year, but in one respect there is a change welcome to every owner of a prospective good three-year-old. This outstanding item is the advancement of the Kentucky Derbys added money to 5,000. With its 0,000 added. this long-established event was already of such importance in general estimation as to induce keen I intersect ional rivalry for its honors in recent years. This new move in the way of adding to its value and dignity cannot fail to intensify the tendency of eastern owners to place the Kentucky Derby on their list of things to be annually earnestly striven for. It does not follow that the race will receive any great increase in its number of entries over its record of former years, but it does follow that there will be a valuable gain in quality of nominations. A few weeks hence we shall know the truth, but in advance it seems there is now sufficient inducement to bring in nominal ions from owners who have never , before patronized the big springtime race. In any ..nt. the Kentucky Derby of 1917 is bound to be regarded with an unusual measure of interest, but it will seem a pity if Cnmpfire and Hornless are not included in its list of entries and contestants. L-t us h09C ti ley will be among North Stars opponents on the eventful day. The events now offered for entries are the following: Kentucky Derby, three-year-olds, 5,000 added; one mile and a quarter. Kentucky Oaks, three-year-old fillies, ,500 added; one mile and a sixteenth. Clark Handicap, three-year-olds and over, ,000 added; cne mile and a sixteenth. Frank F.-hr Stakes, selling, three -year-olds and ctc. ,000 added; one mile. R.ishford Manor Stakes, two-year-olds, colts .ind geldings. ,000 added: four and a haif furlongs. Debutante Stakes, two year-olds, fillies, ,000 added; half mile. Juvenile Stakes, selling, two-year-olds, ,000 added; five-eighths mile.
