TEMPTING STAKES FOR KENTLW0RTH PARK. A. M. Orpen Says Purse Offering Will Be in Line with Other Canadian Tracks. By Ed Cole. New York. January 21. — A. M. Orpen was a visitor to New York yesterday. "Just a passing through visit," said he. "Am on my way to Jersey. You see I have- starte-d my two boys. Abo and Fred, in the electrical supply business and I am going to stock them up with the best goods I can obtain. "What about racing in Canada this season, you ask? Why I think the general growth in the turfs popularity will insure probably the best racing ever seen in the Dominion. There are a number of imported horses that will meet the domestic-bred and that fact in itself will create interest. As regards Kenilworth Park, following Windsor without a break this should be an incentive for horsemen to ship there with fourteen straight racing days to look forward to. It is more than probable, too. that we shall hang up some tempting stakes to be in line with other Canadian tracks. We may hold our first meetings at Dufferin Iark and Hillcrest earlier than usual — perhaps in May or June — but that is not yet definitely settled." The New Legislative Tax. In speaking of the taxation on the tracks in Quebec, Mr. Orpen said taxation was to be expected and that all tracks around Montreal would bare to cut their cloth to fit the legislative man. "It will be a hard task for some of them to pay expenses." he returned, "but taxes have to be me t and it will be- a ease of the- managers revising their expense list at courses where the profits were limited under the old regime. I know the ,250 a day tax in Ontario cut quite a figure at the end of a me-eting but it is a tontribution for a good cause and I am always willing to contribute to any fund for the good of the community. In returning to the Kenilworth Iark subject, it is our intention to make the- recent acquisition to the Canadian Jockey Club ranks an acceptable member of the family both in purses, stakes and appearances. It was somewhat cruele when we opened last year. There will be many improvements when operations are ne-newed this year." Thomas Hare, who is interested with Mr. Orpen in his rae-ing ventures, is on his way to Havana with his family. Letters from his brother. Jack Hare, state that business is niui-h better at Orieirtal Park than last rear. Brown to Sell Oriental Park. It is rumored around Rroaelway that 11. D. Brown may dispose of Oriental Park to a Cuban association after this season. R j 1 Mackenzie is back from New Orleans. He says they are having a prosperous meeting, but the weather and track conditions have been against them. A bitter from New Orleans states that the attendance- is lighter than anticipated, clue to the in-cleme-nt weather, many of the New York operator, being on-lookers for till present. Much of the betting is being done- on the credit system, consequently there is less work for clerks, many of whom have to maneuver every day to get tin- which the guardians of the gate de-mand lor ad-nii---ion.
