JUAREZ MEETING CLOSES TYPHUS QUARANTINE PREVENTED SUNDAYS RACING TAKING PLACE. Unexpected Obstacles Induced Colonel Winn and His Associates to Abandon Further Attempts to Race This Winter. Kl Paso. Tex.. January 2K. — The races at Juarez were di dared .ff today owing to the rigid enforce Jin lit of tlie new federal ]uarantine rule, which was put iuto effect between tlie two ports here last night by Dr. IMerce. a federal representative. The rule will not permit American* to enter into Mexico :fter 7 p. in., aim will not allow Mexicans to come over li re without being inspected and examined for typhus This morning, after eight oclock, the Mexican authorities at .luanz would not allow their people to cross over to our side, nor would they let Americans enter Mexican territory, causing a blockade Acting largely upon the advice of persons familiar with the conditions in Juarez and. believing it unwise to longer continue the races in the face of the present difficulties and health restrictions. CM. Winn, manager of the Jockey Club Juarez, made the •announcement tonight that tlie meeting at the Juarez track was terminated for the present season. While Col. Winn does not believe there is any danger and certainly no greater now than hereto-fore, others whose opinion he values have advised him that aafrtjr and precaution at this time would not be misplaced. Col. Winn is therefore naturally not disposed to assume a needless responsibility. The |uarantine restrictions, both upon tlie Amen can side and tlie retaliatory measures upon the Other, due possibly, to natural resentment, have had a disquieting effect upon the public, so that few would care to undertake possible discomforts or molestation. The management of the Jockey Club Juarez was loath to end the- meeting thus abruptly, but. as there were only six days remaining to be run according to the announced schedule, then will be no hardship to the hors men. who have pro-. pered well under tie- liberal policy of the club. By next season it is expected that the troubles across the Rio Grande will all be over, when an other meeting, bigger and better than ever, will be given.
