FAVORITES PROVE FICKLE NEW ORLEANS CHOICES ARE BAD PICKING AND FOOL THEIR FOLLOWERS. Bob Hensley Takes the Main Race in Easy Fashion — Crump Rides Three Winners and Robinson Two— Track Remains Bad. New Orbans, La., January 30. — Jockey W. Crump, under contract to F. W. Moore, figured extenshely iu the Fair Grounds racing this afternoon, in pilot-iag the fird three winners. He inaugurated his successes with a victory on Margery and. in succession, followed with wins on Mr. Mack and Merchant. Ideal weather, the first in weeks, was instrumental in causing another big patronage at the track. The going was sticky and holding, some of tiie starters stumbling and floundering in woeful fashion. The three-quarters handicap served as the feature and it resulted in an easy victory for Bob Hensley. which led the others from the start and had much S|»eed in reserve at the finish. Diamond landed in second place, and Whirling Dun showed a crack performance to finish third, as he was awav poorly. Jockey F. Robinson was not far behind Crump in the matter of winning mounts, for he brought home Bob Hensley and Woodward. T. Mclaggart piloted Impression. Incidentally it might be said that Woodward and Impression both showed improved performances over their last previous starts. Backers of favorites again experienced losses, most of their best fancied choices failing dismally. Bob Hensley was the medium of a coup and was backed in confident style. The management is making elaborate preparations for Wednesday, which will be the only ladies day of this meeting. It is expected that all former attendances at the course will be broken. Jot hey B. Warscher. who is under contract to Billy Karrick. was restored to good standing this afternoon, after a sharp reprimand by the judges. J. W. May was an arrival today from Loiiisv ille. Ky., and reports that the horses wintering there are progressing in good style. Max llirsch. trainer for Congressman O. W. Loft, was an arrival today from Belmont Park and. alter lo d.iig over the horses his employer contemplated purchasing, called the deal off. the youngsters not coming up to the requirements of the trainer. The stakes for Churchill Downs, which close February 1. are engaging much attention from owners, and secretary Campbell, who is looking after the interest of the New Louisville Jockey Club here, report! a splendid list of nominations. Max llirsch stated that Campfir- and Hourless are wintering in great style at Belmont Park and pre nisi to develop into crack three-year-olds. The other racers wintering at Belmont Park are also doing well, most of them having escaped sickness or ailnn nts.
