UP TO KENTUCKY BREEDERS. Within Their Power to Make Possible the Realization of Proposed Champion Stakes. The announcement of the Latonia Championship Stakes, which will be an annual feature at the fall meeting at Latonia after MM, was well received by the horsemen, says a Kentucky turf writer. The stake is something new in this c- dfe try, being patterned on the lines of the Futu. W-but being for three -year-olds instead of two-year dds. It is not a Futurity, and should not lie classed as one. It is quite likely that entries to the stake will close about March 1 or March IB. By that time ninety nine per cent of the foals have been dropped, and the best looking and most richly -bred ones should be nominated for the big Kentucky stake. Marcs are nominated for the Futurity, and sometimes they slip their foals or are barren. Actual live horses and fillies will be named in this event, and. although it looks as though it is a long time to wait until they are raced, three-year-old futurities on the trotting turf are quite common. A good colt entered in this event is bound to bring more in tin- sale ring than one which has no engagement. Take the case of Frigerio last summer. The Baker Brothers neglected to enter the horse in any of the rich stakes. and when it was shown he was a wonder at racing the liest price they could get was 2,000. Had Frigerio been nominated for the Cincinnati Trophy and some of the big Saratoga events he would have easily brought 0,000. So will be the case with this big event to be run at Latonia. Colts and fillies which have ben nominated for it are going to command greater prices than those which fail to get in. If the proper support is received, the race should be worth about 5,000 to the winner, making it the biggest race by far on this contieut. Racing will have to be built iq in England, and it will be many years before even the Kpsoni Derby will have such a value. Kentucky breeders who do not race their horses in Kentucky and seldom nominate them to any stakes in the Blue Grass are liable to pass up this grand opportunity. If they do, the stake will be passed up by the management. It is a big undertaking for a plant of the size of Latonia. and horsemen should support it to the limit. With 5.010 added to this stake it means that in all about 0,M8 will be given away that day at Latonia. It takes a 00,000 handle in the mutuel machines to pay such a day as this. As to handling that amount, it is impossible, so that it can be seen that the Latonia management is not going to make any money on such a big day as that.
