DOUBTS ROARING BEING HEREDITARY. In one eif my old scrap hooka I came across a lot of correspondence ill cemnection with the late Hume- Websters proposal to bring the great Ormonde back to England for the stud from his exile- in the Argentine-. Although Ormonde had give-n us Orme — uneloubtedly the best cedt of his year, ami a two-year-old at the- time of the controversy — a number of worthy people rtishe-d into print protesting against his projected return on the ground that he was a roarer. Even so seuind an authority as "Oxonian" the late- Mr. Doyle had grave doubts about the wisdom of having Ormonde back, owing, as he wrote, to his pedigree being saturated with rearing blood. As things turned out Ormonele came- back to England, but only en route for California, having been purchased by the American breeder, W. Oli. Mac-elonough, for tin- the-n re-e-or-1 sum for a stallion of 31,259 sovereigns. Before Ormonde was originally sold by the Duke of Westminster to Senor Hon Juan Boaeaa in Booth America he had begun his stud life at Eaton under most favorable auspices, and in his first season he shred amongst others Orme Angelica, sister tee St. Simon; Sorcerer Crucible, dam of GoldfleM, etc.; Oolel-fine-h Thistle, dam of Common, Throstle, etc.; Llanthony Agnes Ihtinck. Those named were a quartet of colts which would have- done credit to any sire, and but for Ormes mysterious Ulnesa iv his early three-year-old days he- would no doubt have won both the Two Thousand Guineus and Derby. As things were iie carried off the Eclipse stakes at Bnndowa Park, two years running on top of the Middle Park Plate and Dewhurst Plate in iiis first season. There was never the slightest suspicion about Ormes wind, nor was there about the wind of his famous sons, Plying Fox ami Orby. of which th" former carried off the "triple crown." while the other won the Derby. Both those last have- in turn steed high-class colts and fillies. Plying Fox being responsible in France fe r sacfa cracks as Jarely, Adam. Ajax. Val dOr. etc.. while Orby. which was foaled eight years later, has already given ample evidence of his merit as a stallion with such as Diaeiumenos. Eos. Diadem and others. — W. Allison in London Sportsman.
