i • HANDICAP FEATURE TO SAY0NARRA. Decisively Defeats Conning Tower and Ed Cudihee — Jockey 0Erien to Ride for James Butler. Tijuana. Mex.. March 1. — Sayonarra won the Bal-lena Handicap here today. The race was made to order for the Peter Quince filly and. after saving Brack ground on the turn-, she wore the leader* down in the stretch and won going away. Ed Cud. thee set a fast pace during the early running, but tired in the last eighth and hung on gamely after being passed by Conning Tower. The Dexter Handicap saw Old Broom display his old-time form and win easily. Hocnir, a choice in the race, was left at the post. Star of Love set the early pace, but Old Broom moved past him at the three eighths post and won in a c. inter. Merry Twinkle continued his winning streak to account for the second race. QaSSStt and Choctaw were away slowly and. though they made up a It ..f ground, they could not catch the winner. Saiwr was an easy winner of the three year-old race. The Coronach. Selling Stakes, which will be de cided on Sunday, will he run under the old selling rule, the winner to be auctioned in front of the stand. That was the rule when the stake nominations were made. Williitn Walker claimed Merry Twinkle after winning tin- seceSHj race. Troxler and OBrien to Go East. Two stars of the riding colony here have secured "iigagi mints with big eastern stables for the coming season. Roscoe Troxler some time ago signed to ride for P. A. Clark, a millionaire New Yorker. and more recently "Jack" OBrien attached his signature to a contract with James It. Butler, owner of the Empire City track and a pretentious racing stable. Curiously enough these two havi done nearly all the riding for the leading stable at Tijuana this winter — the Nevada Btoek Farm Troxler having sun ceded OBrien with the Wing-field establishment. Like Troxler. Pickens and on-or two others of the most saccessfal riders here. OBrien seems to have taken a new lease on life, and after five years of work in the saddle since iie came over from Ireland, he has apparently reached his best at Tijuana. Up to and including Kehriuirv 27. the iiiiicty-sj:.th day of the pre-- u! meeting, he had Iff mounts and won with fifty of them, a winning percentage of just a shade under twenty -six. and he was "in the money" with yast a fraction less than fifty-nine per cent of his mounts. The "Irishman" has made considerable money at his vocation, and the best evidence that he has not "wasted his substance in riotous living" is to be found in the fact that he owns a nice little ranch near Denver. Dominion Parks Many Owners. The most valuable piece of horseflesh that has ever come out of the east, figuring from increased valuation in less than six months, is Dominion Park From a sixty -dollar bene a short time ago. Dominion Iark has attained the distinction of being a ,000 plater. George Alexandra having for the second time claimed her for the latter figure. Any hors that mikes money for various owners in a short space of time must be considered a good horse, ami gauged in that way Dominion Iark is a real gem. C. E. Brown, trainer for Hiter and Ford, bought the daughter of Hurst Park at Latonia last fall for 1917.sh0, and after coining bete, won two races and ran third with her twice, thereby earning 70. Then J. Hoskins claimed her for 1917.sh80, iniieh to Browns delight as he thus virtually got *1.270 for a horse that had cost him 1917.sh0. Hoskins won a parse, 00, with her and then lost her to Alexandra for 1917.sh00, thus netting 1917.sh00 on his investment, an even 100 per cent. Alexandra let her go to Kay Spenee for just what he paid for her. but in the meantime she won one race and ran second in his colors, clearing s:i!i". for him. The filly proved ir.or • profitable to Spence than to any except her original owner, for he got two purses with her and then sold her back to Alexandra in what has become th" usual way. fo; SI. 000. giving him a profit i.i his brief ownership of the man- of 00.
