PROTEST AGAINST STOPPING OF RACING. Sudden Upsetting of Arranged Meetings Would Entail Big Loss Says Racing Representatives. Ottawa, Out., May 28. — A deputation representing the racing interests of Ontario and Qnelxc waited on Sir Robert Rordcn and Minister of Justice to protest against the immediate cutting out of race track meetings as soon as the present spring meetings are concluded. The racing interests pointed out to the ministers that they had already made financial arrangements for this year, and the sudden upsetting of plans would involve considerable monetary loss. They claimed that under the cir cunistances, and iu view of the fact that they had gone ahead under the law of the land, believing that sufficient warning at least would be given of any change, all race meetings already arranged for should be allowed to Ik- held. They put up the proposal to the government that they would raise no abjection at all to closing up the tracks after this year for the rest of the war. The Prime Minister and the Minister of Justice promised to give their representations due consid oration, but held out no promise of any reconsideration of the governments decision reached last week. It is understood that instead of bringing down a bill, as originally intended, the government now proposes to take action by order in council under the war measures act, and possibly a few days latitude may be allowed after July 1 in case any of the spring meetings now advertised ami arranged for are not concluded. Dealing with the matter by order iu council instead of by parliamentary legislation will, it is thought, simplify matters for the government and avoid the delays and lobbying of parliamentary legislation. Among those on the deput.it ion were Messrs. George Ilendrie. Albert Dymeiit. George W. Reard-more. Edward Seagram, R. W. Davies and W. P. Eraser, representing the Ontario Jockey Club: Messrs. Colin Campbell and Northey of Montreal: C. L. Livingston of Cohourg. Charles Miller of Toronto. Crawford Ross of Ottawa and Samuel M -Rride of Toronto, who appeared for the standard-bred and harness horse breeders interests.
