LATONIA BACKERS SUFFER REVERSES. Phocion Defeats Squeeler in the Main Race of the Day Kleburne Takes a Race. Latonia, Ky., July 2. Tho crratice Phocion was again in the limelight this afternoon when he showed the way to a good band of sprinters in the ,000 three-quarters feature race and won easily from Squeeler, an overwhelming favorite, in the easiest manner possible, America heading the others in third place. The winner raced close to Squeeler during the first half mile and drew out with apparent ease in the stretch. The hard storm which visited these parts last night caused the track to be muddy this morning and was responsible for the numerous withdrawals, but the course continued to imprqre steadily as the afternoon progressed and was but little away from its best condition at the close. T. C. McDowells representatives were conspicuous, two of the purses going to ids Precious, and Plum. Both were well supiwrted by the owner. The difficult card, coupled with the changeable track, caused the backers to sustain heavy losses, as most of their best-backed ones were downed in successive order. They began their rougli experience when Fight Fair in the opener failed to get a place. Trustys defeat in the second was an additional jolt, the winner in this turning up in Kleburne, a first timer out in a long while. Tex Forman was the next offender, his failure to be placed proved additionally costly. They did not proft to any extent by Little Princess success in the next race, for they accorded extensive support to several of the others. Squeelers defeat was the hardest blow they had during the afternoon. J. Rufus furnished the upset in the sixth race and his improvement was marked. Carrolls riding of him was also in vast contrast to that he gave him in his preceding start. The favorite, Highland Lassie, quit badly after following Alert closely to the stretch turn. Todays attendance was remarkably large considering it was Monday. The volume of betting was - also substantial. Westy Hogan Shipped to Fort Erie. Kay Spencc sent a division of liis horses to Fort Erie yesterday. In the same consignment went those of John O. Whitlow, including Westy Hogan. The Keystone stable also sent its horses there. The stewards directed that the horse Irvin Arthur be scratched from the second race because he was not ;trained by a licensed trainer. Fink was fined. 5 by the stewards for failure, to name a jockey at the proper time to ride County Court. Among the shipments to Grand Rapids this afternoon were the horses of G. W. J. Bisscll, E. C. Crockett, A. Luzader, F. Gering, Jr., and H. Chancellor. T. G. McDowell this morning acquired by private sale the filly Auriga, which he will take with the others in his establishment to Saratoga. A special train of eleven cars of racers will leave here for Empire City track and Saratoga July 6. Work-outs Sunday were over a fast track and included the following: Alert Three-quarters in 1:21.
