MOUNT VERNON HANDICAP. ST. ISIDORE IS AN ADDED STARTER AND VICTOR IN THE BIG RACE. IRoamcr Runs Unplaced Wcsty Hogan Is Narrowly Beaten by Rivcrdale Livingston Scores a Double with Miss Boncro and Sosius. New York, July IS. Under an intelligent ride by Jockey Rowan, the Brighton Stables St. Isidore upset public calculations in the Mount Vernon Handicap, when lie scored a victory and soundly defeated Andrew Millers Koainer, which ruled a prohibitive favorite. The winners success was ;i decisive one, but the next three at the finish were only noses apart, with Daddys Choice taking second place and then came Wistful and Koainer. Roamer, as usual, was tiic one to make the early pace, with St. Isidore always the closest- in pursuit. . This was the order until on the turn for home, whore Daddys Choice moved up witli a rush on the inside and St. Isidore came around on the outside. For a few strides Koainer fought out the leadership with this pair, but St. Isidore had the most reserve speed and went to the front with a rush inside of the eighth post. Koainer and Daddys Choice then fought it out for place honors, but the Miller gelding tired badly a few yards from the winning line and, Wistful, closing up on the outside, got up in time to nip him for third place. This was the eighth running of the Mt. Vernon Handicap, the brief history of which is as follows: Year. Winner. A.Wt. Jockey. Val. Hampered by four bandages, Wcsty Hogan, John O. Whitlows speedy three-year-old from the west, was defeated by a nose by River-dale in the short three-quarters handicap that was second in interest to the Mount Vernon, as the race was run Westy Hogan was much the best, despite his equipment, lie was saved in behind the leader to the stretch turn and then moved up with a rush on the outside. After moving up alongside Bedtime Stories, Connelly elected to take him back of that filly and move to the inside. He not only took liini back of the pacemaker but also back of Blverdale and the move finally brought him to the rail and in the deepest going. Despite all this Westy Hogan came on in game fashion and was only defeated by the scantest of margins. A protest followed the decision of the placing Judges in the final race, when they hung out the number of James Butlers Bantry. A noisv crowd surrounded the judges stand and the Pinkcrtons were forced to clear a path in order that the judges might leave the stand. James T. Looney claimed Intone out of tho fifth race for ,351. He lost this nlater by the claiming route in his last start. The August Belmont Stable was shipped to Saratoga today and the stable jockey, J. Butwell, will motor to the Spa tomorrow. J. Carroll will ship the W. K. Coe racers to Saratoga on Monday, while the division of the K. T. Wilson stable, at present at Belmont Park, will make the trip at the same time. Emil Herz has shipped the English mare. Set Square, to Kentucky, where she will be bred to Short Grass next year.
