FORFEIT THEIR MEMBERSHIP. HORSEMEN WHO RACED AT RECENT TH0RN-CIIFFE MEETING TO BE DROPPED. Thoroughbred Horsemens Association Will Take Such Action, Says Thomas C. McDowell Trainer Welsh Recovering from Injury, Saratoga, X. Y., August 2. Thomas C. McDowell, one of the directors of the, .Thoroughbred Horsemens Association, in speaking of the recent Thorncliffe meeting, saidthat all members who raced there, automatically forfeited their membership and will no doubt be dropped from the roll at the next meeting of the organization. The association would have no strength if the action of the deserters was passed over and permitted comment," said Mr. McDowell. "The Breeders Association is built on a more solid foundation than any of its predecessors and if horsemen do not care to belong to it, there is no compulsion in the matter. I do not know what action will be taken by the officers when they meet regarding those who did not abide by the ruling of the parent body relative to Thorncliffe. They naturally are no longer associated with the organization and have forfeited all rights and privileges. Whether any further action will be taken by the association is a matter that will be discussed at the next meeting, which will probably be held in the near future." Thomas Welch is recovering rapnlly from his accident in which he broke his wrist. His right arm is still in a sling, but docs not interfere with his duties in preparing Mr. Wideners horses for the races. Mr. Thomas Guerrjvwho in the days of old Monmouth Park, was a "prominent figure in the social set of turfmen, set aside .a. few days from business to look over Saratoga, in his party are Mr. F. C. Cunningham and Thomas Icllf of Boston Dr. Chamberlain, of Philadelphia entertained them at the Lake House after the races. Bob Rose, who .once owned Clifford and other good horses, is one of the prominent, .figures in the club honVe." George Johnson, senior, who for the past thirty years has figured as an owner and breeder of horses, arrived today. "I could not miss Saratoga as long as I , can get around" was Mr. Johnsons comment as he shook the hands of his numerous acquaintances. Old Rosebuds Defeat Commented Upon. The defeat of Old Rosebud in yesterdays handicap has been freely commented upon and Moles-worths waiting tactics criticised. In Old Rosebuds recent races in Canada he was ridden exactly the same, running under stout restraint almost from beginning to end. The conservative critics believe, the horses he met in the handicap were a trifle too good for him under his heavy impost. Dr. J. C. Chamberlain, of Philadelphia, motored to Saratoga from Buffalo. "I thought I could beat all those horses with Corn Tassell" said trainer Tom Healey, "but Ill show them a little class in the next race with Straight Forward and Killdee." He did, as they finished first and second, running away from Woodtrap after the latter had showed the way for four-fifths of the journey. The attendance was rather light for the second day at Saratoga and a canvas of the commissioners and odds layers showed a rather quiet market. In commenting upon the conditions, Dick Doggett said business always was light for the first few days, but generally boomed after the first week. Al Hudson proclaimed the light shower welcome and accentuated his remark by walking out in front of the club house to cool out after the claim of foul was made against Hank ODay. His big bet of the year was on the Macomber horse. Jnmes Fitzsimmons arrived today with a string of twenty-two horses, belonging to different owners. There were four here, making a total of twenty-six in his charge, all of which shlppod well. Harry Fink was a busy man about the course this afternoon, purchasing Square Dealer from W. II. Pearce and later disposing of this colt and Sandstone II. to J. Owens, who acted for the Greentree Stable in the transaction.
