ASTONISHING TOTALIZER DIVIDENDS. South Australia Has Had One Return of ,080 and Ton of 00 or More. South Australian sportsmen, so used to big dividends, were somewhat amused June 20 last to read a telegram from Sydney pointing out that a horse at one of the meetings had run second and paid 250 to 1. Such happenings are nothing unusual in Southern Australia and, strangely enough, inside of .1 few days this particular dividend was easily outdone and the record second dividend for Australia was registered. In a field of eighteen West-endale finished second in the hurdle race at Mor-phettville at Tattersalls meeting and he returned a dividend of 07 to . This is easily the best second dividend which has been paid since the days of paying two dividends was introduced, and if Westendale had won outright, he would have paid the second best dividend on record in South Australia. Here is a table of some of the big dividends paid by the machine in South Australia: D. O. D. For some time past it has been freely rumored that electric batteries have been used in various ways on horses taking part in trotting and race meetings in Perth, AVestern Australia. One was discovered by A. Clydesdale, the secretary of the AVestt-rn Australia Racing Association, and a disqualification for life followed. Tlx: latest discovery was accidentally made. Detectives were searching a house for stolen property when they found two saddles aud found that tney contained batteries, j Agreements were found between the maker of the saddles and owners, and set out that the maker should receive 5 for the use of a saddle, and that the owner should lay him the odds of 5, the starting price to be not less than 4 to 1. The saddles were thoroughly overhauled, and the wires, ingeniously hidden, were traced to the batteries, which were 110 bigger than a spectacles case, and were concealed hi the stuffing of the saddles. The racing saddle battery was worked from the horn of the saddle by pulling a slightly projecting piece of catgut. The shock was applied from under the saddle, the contacting points being removable, and probably taken away before the horses returned to the weighihg-in enclosure. The trotting saddle batteries were also hidden in the stuffing aud the shock applied from the spurs, connecting wires to which would run down the riders legs, and could be detached without the points being seen. The battery was also operated from the horn of the saddle, a button being hidden under the leather, which was pressed to put the battery in motion. The electrician was able to show exactly how the batteries worked. He stated that a horse cannot stand nearly the voltage of a man. It is estimated that about three-quarters of a volt is all that is applied to a horse, and that this is quite sufficient for the purpose required. It is said that three electric whips were overlooked by tho detectives until it was too late. Winnings of Australian Horses.
