MAXWELT0N BEING FURBISHED UP Horses Arriving at St. Louis for Meeting Beginning Wednesday, August 29. St. Louis, Mo.. August 7. Maxwelton is resounding to the hoof beats of the thoroughbreds stabled there and some good work is being done. Five-eighths in 1:02 and half mile in 50 are common. W. H. Slippington, formerly superintendent of the Fair Grounds, took charge yesterday and lias a big force of men at work fixing the track. There are about fifty horses at the track now. One of the late arrivals is Geo. W. Scott of Abilene, Texas. In fact, the Texas contingent is especially strong at the grounds. II. T. Batchler, T. McCafferty and several others from the Lone Star state having their horses stabled there.. T. McCafferty is Frank ONeills father-in-law. ONeill is riding in France, where he has been one of the leading jockeys for a numb.er of years. Geo. Scott will be remembered by St. Louisans. His filly Juanita won the race at the Fair Grounds that was being run on tho day when the cvclone hit in 1897. He had this filly and Lady Brittanic at the Fair Grounds at the time. Horsemen arriving here announce that there will be a notable gathering in this city for the breeders convention and racing, which opens August 29.
