1 TRIUMPHS OF FILLIES IN DERBYS The Moscow Derby tha Latest to Fall to Ono of tha Weaker Sex. Of late years fillies have on various occasions proved themselves the superiors of the colts at weight for sex in the chief classic races, not only in England, but also in France and other lands on the continent. We in England have seen three fillies victorious in the Derby in recent years, Slg-norinetta, Tagalie and Fifinella having scored in the last nine years. This year in France W. K. Vanderbilts filly Brumelli, has carried all before her, and now we have had another member of the fair sex successful in Russia in Salome, which won the Moscow Derby after scoring in the Oaks and two other races. Signorinetta, tracing back as she does to Barcaldine via Chaleureux, is a member of the Matchem family, but Tagalie and Fifinella belong to the Eclipse line, being a daughter and a granddaughter of Cyllene. The French filly Brumelli, on the other hand, goes back in tail-male to that third great old-time sire Herod, her sire being Maintenon, a male line grandson of Le Sancy, which in turn was a grandson of Thormanby. With Salome we have the St. Simon line of Eclipse once more triumph, for she is a daughter of Saltpetre, which was by St. Simon Billow. The last named mare was a stayer and a winner of the Ascot Stakes.. Saltpetre himself won two good races during his career on the turf, which extended over five years, inclusive of the Goodwood Cup as a four-year-old, beating Chatsworth and others. As a five-year-old he won the Summer Handicap at Newmarket from Palmy Days a right- good mare and others, and he was seritto Rvtssia.ln the following year. Of Tiny Queen, the dam of the Moscow Derby winner, I have no trace, although from her name she is apparently of English descent. W. Allison in London Sportsman.
