ICLOSE FINISHES AT M AX W ELTON PARK Duka of Shelby and Bcrtodano Score Victories by Narrow Margins in Thair Respective Races, St. Louis, Mo., September 0. A good crowd turned out to witness some fair racing today. The card was made up of six overnight races and they furnished good speculation and keen competition. Close finishes were in order. John Hyncr, well supported, won the opening race for two-year-olds, winning handily at the end. Louise Stone repeated her victory of the opening day, when she beat a fair band of sprinters at three-quarters of a mile. The fifth race proved a real duel between Duke of Shelby and Conflagration. The latter weakened in the final sixteenth, which enabled the fast closing Duke of Shelby to win the purse in the last strides. Bertodano, well supported by the oral bettors, annexed the closing race by a narrow margin from Col. Gutelius. The latter finished on the inside of the winner at the end, which cost him the race. Light showers fell after the first race, which lasted ten minutes, resulting in making the track somewhat slow. Jockey Majestic was suspended for the balance of the meeting.
