.1. SPUR PRINCIPAL WINNER OF JAMES BUTLERS STABLE DURING- THE RACING OF 1917 . ; The great measure of success achieved by the stable of J. Butler during the 1917 racing season was due principally to the performances of Spur, Wistful and Paddy Whack in eastern stake events. Though the earnings of tlie stable fell considerably short of the 1915 record, the 2,195 dividends paid by horses carrying the Butler colors can be said to have upheld the stable traditions. As in 191G when he won 9,720 of the 5,045 credited to the stable. Spur was the star of the Butler string. While his 1917 record in stake events fell short of that of 1910", he still had an excellent year, as earnings of 0 325 will attest. Spur took part in eight stake events, winning three of them, with four seconds and one third. His victories were in the Empire City Handicap, the Yonkers Handicap and the Monumental Handicap at Pimlico. Wistful, the next best money getter in tlie Butler string, has ,553 to her credit She won the Coaching Club Handicap at Belmont Park and the Martha Washington Handicap at Laurel-finished second in the Ladies Handicap at Belmont Park and tlie Alabama Stakes at Saratoga and was awarded third money in the Gazelle Handicap at Aqueduct, the Mount Vernon Handicap at Empire City the Knickerbocker Handicap at Empire City and the Ellieott Handicap at Laurel. Paddy Whack in third place, is credited- with six firsts, three seconds and three thirds. His contribution to the stable earnin"s is ,320. Paddy Whack Avon the Xewton Selling Stakes at Jamaica and the Melrose Selling Stakes at Empire City. He finished second in the Myrtle Selling Stakes at Aqueduct and has thirds to his credit in the Rockaway Selling Stakes at Aqueduct and the Amsterdam Selling Stakes at Saratoga. Ballad the other Butler stake winner, finished lirst in the Tarrytown Selling Stakes at Empire City and was awarded third money in the Union Selling Stakes at Aqueduct, the Empire City Derby and the Bed Cross Handicap at Empire City. Twenty-three horses represented the Butler stable during the year and all but five of them contributed to the stables earnings. Following is the 1917 record: Horse. Col. and Sex. A.
