: I BIG BAND OF YOUNG FOREIGN-BRED HORSES WHICH RACED FOR G. H. BROWNE THIS YEAR i : .. Twenty-one of the twenty-eight horses which raced under the colors of Grant Hugh Browne in 1917 were foreign bred. Outside of King Herod, none of them acquired any particular distinction in racing, although African Arrow and Irish Kiss proved to be at least useful. King Herod may have been by nature a really good three-year-old. At least some competent judges thought so. But an injury and leg troubles beset him early in the racing year, so a true estimate of his actual prowess could not be reached definitely. Of the American-bred horses Ed Cudihee was the stables principal money earner and, when at his best, is a horse of great speed at any distance up to a mile. Another native-bred which more than paid her way was the Abe Frank mare, Josefina Zarate. Some of his English-bred ones were raced but little and, being now acclimatized, may race well for his interest in 191S. The stable record for the year was: Horse. Col. and Sex. A.
